@idrwalerts if #German Type U212 are chosen, MDL will have to unlearn the expertise gained on #Scorpene/Kalvari #submarine, its investment in setting up kalvari subs will be lost (REPEATING mistake #India did with #HDW/#Shishumar class submarine) and relearn/redevelop the expertise for U212

‘𝐌𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝’ 𝐚 𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐨𝐫’𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞 #UntoldStoryNavy by #MananBhatt In the early 2000s, on a usual Rainy Evening in the maximum city of Mumbai, INS #Shishumar, the lead Submarine of Indian Navy’s Germen (HDW) Designed SSK class submarine received Sailing Orders. The Sub was advised to urgently cast off and proceed for an operational deployment. The on-board crew started to prepare the Sub for sea as ‘General Recall’ was announced for the Ship’s Company. Within an hour, the sub was ready to sail out from Mumbai Harbour, as was its crew. Special Sea Duty men for leaving harbours closed up on their watch stations. No matter the weather, the transit through the channel with 14 to 15 members of its crew (the Special Sea Duty Men) on top of the Sub’s surface is extremely dangerous. As the Submarine proceeded out of Mumbai Harbour and entered into the channel, a giant wave broke over the Sub, sweeping Leading Seaman Shambir Singh off his feet and onto the swirling ocean. It was pitch dark, the men on the deck saw Shambir disappear amongst the waves. They saw him surface once briefly a few meters from the Sub after being swept overboard. Immediately, the Sub was brought to stand still, engines stopped so that Shambir did not get sucked into the churning propellers. The Sub’s Crew gathered every torch available on-board and started to look for their shipmate. The Sub kept floating and drifting in the middle of the busy Mumbai channel for more than an hour as the crew looked for Shambir and shouted his name, on top of their voices. They started to lose hope, the CO decided to report the incident to the Command. Shambir’s struggles: Shambir after getting swept away by a rogue wave in to the swirling ocean, was taken far away from his submarine by the waves and the current of the channel. Initially, struggling for breath amongst the rain and sea waves, he came in to terms with the situation and stayed afloat. After a few minutes, he gathered his strength and began to sail toward the sub, which from down there looked like a black shadow, once in a while disappearing behind the waves. It was raining cats and dogs and the Ocean was in its element. Shambir was wary of getting chopped by the sub’s propeller. He tried to keep himself away from the aft section of the submarine and aimed for the fox’le. The rising waves and the strong current kept pushing him away. For more than an hour, he did not lose his calm and kept swimming toward his submarine, using all his strength. Just as everyone on-board Shishumar started to lose hope, Shambir was sighted near the sub. The rough seas were causing the submarine to heave violently, causing some minor bruises to Shambir as he was hauled back on to the vessel by his mates. An accident that could have been a tragedy, is a tale of courage and resilience of Leading Seaman Shambir who swam back to his submarine in rough waters. #MDL earlier saw a similar disruption while manufacturing of Type 209/#Shishumar Class submarines. This pause lead to a loss of skill at MDL which caused a delay in production of #Scorpene by MDL as the workforce had to be trained again. #IADN
