All my life I've seen pro painters talk about "values" by desaturating in Photoshop, and turns out it's one of the most widespread mistake: this is the wrong way to assume values, as the maths are wrong, and let me show you why:

I did things this way initially right after UVs were made: blocked out initial texture colors, went back later and applied more specific textures.
But if you're only doing solid colors, you can stop at this step. ^^

Texturing tip for lazy people: Just put all colors you want to use in one texture and uv-map each vertex to color.
