Parmenides (5th century BC) also supported a spherical earth. Later, by the 4th century BCE, the spherical Earth was widely accepted by the Greeks due to empirical observations. Aristotle (384-322 BCE) provided compelling arguments, such as ships disappearing hull-first over the horizon, the curved shadow of the Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse, and the changing positions of the stars as one travels north or south.
