Great thread of an, IMO, important piece of work on how cells probably respond to and integrate signalling in development. No reason to say this doesn’t happen in #embryos for we just don’t know. #stembryos #gastruloids point out details we need to search for in #embryos.

Stem cells can self-organize morphogenesis in vitro w/o spatial patterning cues. But how? We programmed cells to record their signaling histories to map symmetry breaking during gastruloid morphogenesis (1/n)

The present of #gastruloids looks good & a small/ interactive community is emerging @ them & other #Stembryos, BUT, only time/experiments will tell us whether they're just useful experimentl systems or can make real contributions to new biological principles. I bet on both.
Heterogeneities in fate specification in gastruloids might also exist in the embryo epiblast; need to look. An imprtnt contributin of #Stembryos is to lead us to look ask Qs that we wouldn't have thought before. This beautiful work has much to encourage and justify this exercise.
