The Mirroscope was part of pre cinema’s visual culture, bridging #Stereoscopes and early film projectors. It was used to project family photos, travel postcards, or even comic strips (e.g., a 1911 #MuttandJeff comic slide show), making it a social and educational tool. Its ability to project opaque objects set it apart from slide-based Magic Lanterns, aligning it with devices like the #Radioptican by the H. C. White Company.
The Buckeye Stereopticon Mirroscope Postcard Projector falls within the category of #Episcopes and #Epidiascopes. -30-
Unlike traditional Magic Lanterns that projected transparent slides, the Mirroscope was an opaque projector, meaning it projected images of non-transparent objects by reflecting light off them. This allowed it to display a wide range of items, from postcards to physical objects, making it a versatile tool for both personal and public use.
Based at 5502 Carnegie Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, the company was active in the early 1900s, producing optical devices during a time when Magic Lanterns and Stereopticons were popular for education and entertainment. The Mirroscope was marketed as a consumer-friendly device, simpler than professional Stereopticons but more advanced than basic toy projectors. Images from de Luikerwaal.

Parallel eye stereoscopes. Now I see I mislabelled them. Stereograms are the magic eye pages. But here are the #ponyplay #stereoscopes for #NYE2024

Taxiphote was the name of a series of multiple view #stereoscopes based on slide trays. A counter on the left side shows which slide in the tray is loaded.
The Taxiphote was manufactured for 35 years and came in glass formats 45x107 and 6x13, as well as the less common 7x13 and the enormous format 8,5x17, which was particularly popular between 1855 and 1890.
Revolving #stereoscopes were less expensive and many models support glass #stereoviews or paper #stereocards. This #Vérascope Revolving #Stereoscope by Jules Richard has no mirror to illuminate #stereocards and is designed for the 45x107mm glass format. Images © André Ruiter.

4/4 #Stereoscopes were a popular form of entertainment from the mid-1800s through #WWI. Through modern software, we’re able to animate the two images together to give you a sense of how a viewer might have experienced the image in a stereoscope.
#Stereoscopes are used to view #stereographs, an early form of three-dimensional #photography. To view, a double image is placed in the #stereoscope. When viewed through the stereoscope, the image appears three-dimensional. The earliest stereoscopes appeared in the 1830s.
"For the past 2 years the amounts paid for school apparatus have been much larger than usual. Unfortunately a large part of the money has been paid for #stereoscopes, views, and books to go with them. The views are of interest for a day or two, and then are put aside."
