#Supercore reported a stronger-than-expected increase to 0.7% m/m - although the increase was not entirely broad-based. Most of the contribution came from strong transportation svs (MV insurance) and recreation svs. These two items contributed 0.5pp of the #January m/m % print.
the #supercore #inflation nrs came in at 0.757% M/M vs pr 0.205%, Y/Y 4.017% from 4.049%. The issue with a hot print in January, even if backlooking and mostly from before Trump's inauguration, is that the mkt is already leaning twds higher inflation pressures on #tariffs. There could be a bit of a messy wave coming IF Trump decides to put his signature under a few well placed tariff scuds. Story to be followed but don't be surprised if #bonds stay weak on this until we know more.
Market participants will highly watch the core #CPI #inflation for #January. #Supercore CPI could report an uptick, reflecting a swing in inflation for categories that proved extremely weak in December, such as lodging away from home and other services.
