The Expulsion
The boy watches
his mother beaten
shamed and insulted
she is a thief,
the old men cry,
Men who had wanted her
to covert her,
and covet her
men who had tried to
trade her hunger
for their passions,
now they stand as judges
and executioners,
bitter in their rejection
and thwarted lust.
This Boy cannot
understand
this world without comfort
but he knows
he should be ashamed
because the baying crowd says so
so he will bear the traces of this
guilt,
now and forever more.
He remembers
the hungry nights
and his mother's tears
and his mother's eyes
full of despair
when he groaned and
moaned
in the middle of his hunger,
now he wonders
if he had caused
his mother's suffering
their shame and their expulsion?
Things were better
a long time ago,
when his father
scouted for food
for he and his mother,
but death
in its disruption
had taken his father
away and now
the days are full
of lack and pain
and tears and fear,
now they must seek
haven in places unknown
ostracized as lepers.
He is left now
with the hunger,
and the shame
and the guilt
and the wandering
damaged
and,
trapped in this liminal
state of trauma.
