Update on the #TheOpenAI saga (and a lot of speculation), the firing of @sama and #GPT5 OpenAI is working on GPT5, they have a massive breakthrough, some think AGI, but no one other than OpenAI staff know. Sam alluded to a breakthrough in an interview recently. Ilya, an academic with serious AI safety concerns raises the issue to the team. There is a disagreement, likely over the commercialization of this breakthrough. Some board members coordinate to kick Sam out. Sam gets fired and all hell breaks loose. @gdb, the board chairman quits, a bunch of other OpenAI staff start resigning. Microsoft wasn’t consulted on any of this and is pissed. OpenAI is trying to raise $80+ Billion and that gets shut down hard by VC’s who are on @sama side with his illustrious @ycombinator and tech background. OpenAI is stuck between a rock and a hard place and just announced they are in discussions to get @sama back as CEO 🤯 Does @sama and @gdb start a new Gen AI company or do they go back to OpenAI and restructure the whole thing. A lot of trust was lost amongst colleagues, that is for sure.
