OTD in 1651 the future Charles II awoke to his first full day on the run for his life after defeat at Worcester. 6 weeks of hiding (including, famously, in that oak tree) & donning disguises followed, resulting in one of the greatest escapes in English history. #tocatchaking

With the Irish quickly defeated by Cromwell, the future Charles II felt he had to ally with the Scots when aiming to get his throne back. This battle therefore led to Charles eventually being on the run for his life. #tocatchaking

It was a doomed rising, given the power of the New Model Army; & the efficiency of Cromwell’s secret service. Some of Penruddock’s defeated Royalists were sentenced to indentured slavery in the West Indies. It’d be another 5 years before Charles II was restored. #tocatchaking
