Two doctors I know spent $250,000 on their Tribunal proceedings. One lawyer quoted me the same amount — $250,000 — for my current case, based on an initial four-day hearing. It ended up running for eight days. Imagine if I had said yes! I might have been left living on the streets just to pay my legal fees.

I filed an emergency petition (2/26/24) it was ignored. The Court Appointed Guardian filed an emergency petition (3/13/24) it to was ignored. One month later still ignored and my Mother has a catastrophic stroke (3/18/24) that left her unable to communicate and with the mental capacity of a small child. Now the Judge responds to the Emergency petition and I am given Guardianship. Did I really win? Did my Mom win? This system is not meant to protect ANYONE. Guardianship is a tool used by Attorneys to profit off the suffering of seniors and the disabled. They will do so by any means necessary, isolation, over medicate, neglect, abuse, sanctions, fines, even arresting their loved ones. It is abuse of Power and needs to be eradicated just as we eradicate other diseases. A System so Corrupt and Broken cannot be fixed. It should be dismantled. Our Probate Courts use to be only for decedents estates and that is what they should go back to. Shout out!! Thank you Gretchen Rachel Hammond for your excellent investigation into the dark underbelly of “Guardianship” in Michigan. Gretchen is an award winning journalist who came to Michigan to investigate in 2019. She wrote a five part series titled “THE FORTRESS”. When my Mother was taken in May of 2021 I discovered this well written series and it gave me more insight into what was happening, I was still powerless to stop it because Probate has no oversight or accountability but I at least knew what I was up against. Her investigation led to the firing of 4 public administrators, John Yun, Robert Kirk, Thomas Fraser, and Jennifer Carney yet they were not held accountable for anything and remained in a place of power as “for profit guardians”. In Part 3 of the Fortress I discovered the main cause of my Mothers harm, Attorney Melinda Cameron who was court appointed to act as Attorney for Thomas Howard. In my Mothers case she was court appointed by Judge Freddie Burton Jr. as guardian ad litem. In the first week she told me never to contact her again even though her job was to investigate and give a report to the judge. Judge Burton knew she was not investigating because we brought this to his attention on multiple occasions. In my Moms case this led to my Mother being isolated for over 14 months, sepsis twice, a broken foot, and a stroke that left her unable to communicate and further worsened her dementia. In the tragic case of Thomas Howard, Melinda Cameron was appointed as his Attorney. Thomas Howard, a charismatic Chrysler salesman from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, lived a charmed life with his wife Geraldine. Their idyllic existence included a cottage on Black Lake and a tight-knit community of friends and neighbors. In 2014, Geraldine passed away, but Howard's support system remained strong. Dr. Bashar Abou-Rass, his neighbor and friend of 25 years, kept a watchful eye on the widower. The plot thickened in September 2016 when 88-year-old Howard fell in a Costco parking lot. What began as a simple injury spiraled into a Kafkaesque nightmare of guardianship and alleged elder abuse. Key players emerged: - Judge Kathleen Ryan: Appointed a public administrator as conservator - Thomas Fraser: The appointed conservator who quickly took control of Howard's assets - Melinda Cameron: Howard's court-appointed counsel who seemed to work against his interests In a bizarre 18-minute hearing (theatrical show), Howard's fate was sealed. He was moved to various facilities, his assets (1.3 million) liquidated, and his health rapidly declined. Dr. Abou-Rass and other concerned friends watched helplessly as Howard withered away under Fraser's guardianship. Suspicious real estate deals, unexplained expenses, and negligent care marked Howard's final days. On February 10, 2018, Thomas Howard died, leaving behind more questions than answers about the system meant to protect him. This tale of a beloved salesman's tragic end serves as a chilling warning about the potential abuses lurking within the guardianship system.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ Guardianship is a living hell no family should endure but add into that the lucrative aspect for unscrupulous Attorneys and it is a recipe for disaster. Michigan or any state for that matter can write new legislation that would better protect the vulnerable but when you have parasitic Attorneys preying on them and Judges who don’t follow the law these atrocities will not only continue they will escalate. The key to stopping the abuses in Guardianship is ACCOUNTABILITY! Hold Attorneys and Judges Accountable and instantly these abuses will end. If a member of the family or public acted as they do it would be treated as criminal and that’s how these Attorneys and Judges should also be treated. As always these are my opinions. I want to know how a court of law would believe at 87 (at the time) a Mother would suddenly hate her own children and not want to see them ever again? Accusations from someone who is not an heir nor is she next of kin concerning bank withdrawals she was not involved in and had no legal right to access. My parents were very clear in their Trust they wanted ONLY THEIR 4 children involved in their care and their finances. My siblings and I made the financial decision to create an in-law suite in my home for my parents because they could no longer live at home. We were advised by my fathers doctor as well as my Mother’s we needed to put them in assisted living or one of us would need to move them into our home. Instead of letting a Nursing home take sub par care of our parents and take control of their estate we agreed to use funds from the estate to make the in-law suite in my home. Now because of someone who had no business getting involved the court allowed our Mother to be isolated from us for 14 months and took her $275,000 estate so court appointed attorneys could use it to fight against her estate plan (her wishes) Her own children! I have over $220,000 in legal fees fighting for my own Mother against a broken Probate Court system that has no oversight, no accountability, and have immunity! Wake up Michigan an estate plan will not PROTECT YOU, it isn’t worth the paper it was printed on. Call your state representatives and legislators and DEMAND our vulnerable are protected! There must be oversight and they MUST LOSE IMMUNITY when they break the law and don’t follow a legal binding estate plan. When they are bias and refuse to include the next of kin and heirs in the investigation if a vulnerable adult. (4 adult children) When they ignore fraud committed by someone accessing an incompetent persons bank account and having them sign legal documents, power of attorney, new will. When within 3 months my Mother lost 23 pounds and was hospitalized with sepsis the guardian ad litem had my brother thrown out of the hospital and went into court and said my Mother was getting exemplary care! 😡😡To any reasonable person this is absurd but I promise you this is what is happening in Michigans Probate Courts. #justiceforbettyhayes #protecetthevulnerable #EndGuardianshipAbuse #EndImmunity #Michigan #waynecounty
