A US special forces soldier was arrested on 24 April after allegedly using classified information to bet on a US raid targeting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, according to federal authorities.
Investigators said Gannon Ken Van Dyke placed more than $33,000 in bets on the operation through the prediction platform Polymarket, earning over $400,000 after the mission was carried out.
Authorities said he had insider knowledge as he “participated in the planning and execution” of the raid.
According to the indictment, Van Dyke is facing charges including wire fraud, commodities fraud, and unlawful use of confidential government information.
Prosecutors said the case stems from a scheme in which he used sensitive classified material to place wagers on geopolitical events.
US officials said the trades drew immediate scrutiny due to their scale, while authorities emphasized that exploiting classified information for personal gain constitutes a serious breach of law and national security.
