Thank you to everyone who participated in Run For the Wild this weekend!
It's because of our dedicated guests and race sponsor @MontefioreNYC that we were able to raise over $500,000 to help save wildlife and wild places. #WCSRunfortheWild

.@BronxZoo #wcsRunForTheWild 5k in T-67 days.
You’re damned right I’m getting this sticker ready to slap on the Subaru after I cross the finish line 😤
Training Day 1:
Decided to start by ramping up from my usual 1 mile run (+ ~ 0.5mi total between warm-up and cool down).
Ramped up to 2 miles (at once, not including warm/cool) and I’ll probably roll with that for the next 2 weeks. Then will start creeping up to 2.25, 2.50, 2.75 & finally 3.11 (5k)
Ran 2 miles in 26:17.
I went on a wacky route with much more incline than usual, so I’m going to call this an even 25:00 in the back of my head. Need to measure incline and select optimal training route(s) ASAP.
Previously I’ve only run 2 miles at once (and tracked it) a few times in the last few years. I do remember getting in the 22-24m range.
Day 2 report with many less words: Comes out Tomorrow.
My Running Background:
not much to speak of.
I always found running boring, but I became a casual enthusiast in 2020, as I found it a great way to blow off steam while working on Badrun Khan’s congressional run.
I also found myself very inspired to walk and run in general after learning that it literally soothes your amygdala (calms you down). Something to do with the natural lateral eye to eye movement that occurs when you’re moving forward. Credit @hubermanlab.
Since 2020, I haven’t bothered to dig into optimizing/learning details and terminology. I have just been tracking myself running a mile and trying to beat my PR. I did make it all the way down to 8:16 (from 11+ minutes) in 2020, but I didn’t hold or maintain my momentum, and ended up recording probably less than a dozen sub 9m miles, and almost certainly none since 2021.
Since 2021, I’ve run very sporadically, but enough to keep myself at an under 10m baseline as long as I’ve run at least once or twice in the last month or so.
My best time in recent memory (2023-24) was prob 9 minutes and change, like 9:15 or so, and that was at least a few months ago.
In more recent days, I’ve barely run at all, and was pleased to record a 9:57 recently.
My athletic background: I definitely have some raw materials/God-given talent from my Dad, including some mammoth legs, but I never pursued anything to a high level.
Played pickup basketball my whole childhood right across the street from my apartment in Washington Heights. In the summer this meant from dawn to dusk. Also attended a summer basketball camp at the Coast Guard Academy for a few years. Played in a casual rec league in high school as well for a couple years.
Skied every Winter weekend in childhood, ages 4-13. (my Dad was on the Ski Patrol)
Broke my wrist in the middle of my 6th grade little league’s run towards winning the championship, and I was hitting .400 at the time, so that was a major drag, and I still think about what could have been.
Made my 7th & 8th grade baseball teams at Horace Mann in the Bronx, and my 9th grade team in Rhode Island, but I was never a starter on any of those teams, and I was cut in 10th grade. My issue was form in the field. I can’t do a crow-hop. 😅
Pivoted to tennis my senior year and played in the #3 singles position on a mediocre team.
Biked & skate boarded a lot around town in high school.
Rollerbladed a lot around Washington Heights as a child.
Mostly lazy as an adult, just the occasional gym sesh to keep my back from dying out. And the aforementioned occasional running.
Very excited to see what I can accomplish with some dedication—Even in just 67 days 😃

I’m running my first ever 5k this April!
It’s called the #wcsRunForTheWild at The @BronxZoo.

Here I am at the completion of the @BronxZoo #wcsrunforthewild. I found an animal as slow and lumbering as me. (I kid. The white rhino is actually pretty fast).
