Our project this afternoon was to write a letter to the upcoming First Grade class. We have such precious littles! They have overcome giant obstacles and learned so much this year. #TNBestForAll#LiteracyMatters
Me: Complicated means something has many parts or is difficult to do. Can you share an experience you have had with something that is complicated?
First Grader: School with physical distancing is very complicated because, well, I just want to give you a hug. 💔 #pandemicteaching
Even though this school year looks different from anything we have experience before, students are still making connections and learning! So thankful for the tools to teach under such circumstances. (Goose and the Golden Egg-Sequencing) @Amplify#curriculummatters#tnbestforall
“...We also know that the best readers are the ones who are proficient w/ orthographic/ phonological processing, +poor readers are the ones who rely on alternative ways to read the words (Stanovich, 1980).”
@ReadingShanahan latest blog is spot on + we agree...

“Remember that, as adults, we are the best predictors of how our students and children are doing; they are watching and listening to us. When we take care of ourselves, we’re showing them how they can take care of themselves, too.”
Feeling my bp rise as I read this article. Couldn’t disagree more.
Ss are thriving when receiving systematic phonetic instruction...we have to let people see it!! Start the conversation.

A2 I was taught how to introduce different genres of children’s literature and how to prepare thematic units. I also had to find different articles on reading to review. Did not feel prepared by my initial teacher prep program. #elachat
A1: Teachers need to understand how the many components of reading work together-that there is no one skill to hone in on. It takes a combo of explicit phonics instruction, comprehension strategies, and interesting complex text #ELAChat
“In a classroom that's following the research, you will see explicit phonics instruction and lessons that build oral vocabulary and background knowledge.” #curriculummatters#tnbestforall https://t.co/Cjk7pgxrpj
A7 I think relationships can carry us a long way with parents. I feel ultimately most parents want their Ss to have the best. If we take the time to explain the process and best practices they will be willing to get onboard. #elachat
I have been faced with the challenge of "well young children aren't ready for that content." I think our kids deserve to learn about the human body, civil rights, the Aztec, Inca, and Maya, don't you? #bringit#respect#ELAchat
A3 Exposure, exposure, exposure! Through vocabulary (and content) rich read alouds, class discussions, teacher modeling in everyday conversations, peer groups... anywhere and everywhere we can fit it in. #elachat
