Underrated life advice: Make peace with being unimpressive to the outside world. Drive the normal car. Wear the simple clothes. Live below your means. Stay in the committed relationship. The ability to look ordinary while building an extraordinary life is wildly underrated.
your relationship with discipline changes so much when you shift doing things from shame to love. from ‘i have to clean’ to realizing i deserve to have a clean home. from ‘i need to work out’ to i deserve to have a healthy body. you deserve to have the best from yourself.
I’m convinced that the saddest thing about success is realizing how few people actually wanted to see you succeed. They smiled and cheered to your face but secretly hoped you’d fail. Learn to recognize quiet envy. Cut them from your life. Small circles create big outcomes.
I’m convinced that the most important skill in life is the ability to just figure it out. You’ll face a lot of problems that you have no idea how to solve. There’s nothing more valuable than knowing you’ll see it through. That you’ll handle it. Do the work. Get it done. Repeat.
Stop beating yourself up: When you make a mistake, say, “Well, that was dumb,” learn from it, and just move on. You don't need to turn every failure into an identity crisis. Own it. Fix it. Keep going.
Your environment dictates who you become.
If you are surrounded by people who hate the success of others, people who lack common sense, people who don't think they need to work on themselves, then you will naturally stagnate and grow resentful too.
If you are surrounded by people who are respectful of each other, people who are focused on their own business, people who are enthusiastically seeking to get better, for their own sake but also for the sake of their family and friends, then you will steadily become a more self-confident version of yourself and you will naturally attract happier days.
To my 25-35 year olds, this is the age bracket where most people start to settle and give up on themselves. They plateau, they slow down, they become highly skeptical, they think it’s too late to pursue a goal. Never let their mindset infect yours. You can do anything at any age if you want.
When I go into a situation, I try to keep a mindset of baseline optimism.
- When starting the day: It's going to be a good day.
- When meeting someone new: I'm going to like them.
- When trying something challenging: It's going to work out.
Problems will inevitably arise and I'll deal with them as the situation demands, but my preference is to assume I'm on a winning path until proven otherwise.
The irony of cowardice: It's aimed at self-protection, but it creates shameful secrets. Self-preservation is hardly worth it because of everything it costs in return.
Be brave. Be dignified.
