Scoop: A new study suggests a public takeover of San Diego's electric grid from @SDGE would save ratepayers money in the long run. Full story in Thursday’s @voiceofsandiego Morning Report. (A thread 1/5)

This comes with great regret, and a huge amount of thought and discussion- please read announcement to get more details.

@HPolymenis Not to oversimplify or be condescending; but the only way to stop the bully is to stand up to the bully. You don’t have to stoop to their level; you don’t have ‘clap back’. But you can stand in your own power. I’ve found that when I do this, it’s been more about me than any bully
Shoutout to PATHS Scholar, Mayra Mendiola, who will be presenting her research at the California Alliance for Minority Participation Program, at UC Riverside. Her research focuses on the sequence variation upstream of a cytoplasmic tRNA that modifies cytosolic tRNA expression.
I am incredibly honored to be elected the next co-President of @NucleateHQ. Being a part of Nucleate has been the highlight of my PhD, and I cannot wait to take on this new role so that we can continue providing open-access life science education for the community!
Excited to announce registration for the 28th Annual Meeting of the @RNASociety is now open! This year’s meeting will be in-person @SuntecSingapor Convention & Exhibition Center from May 30-June 4. Register today & see you in beautiful Singapore!

I want to encourage people who are slowly but surely changing systems. You may not see immediate fruit, but know that seeds are being planted. They will grow in due season. You have to believe that your work is not in vain, otherwise, why would you do what you do?
At last! Happy to share our paper on CellOracle – a computational method for dissecting cell identity via network inference and in silico gene perturbation, led by the amazing @kenjikamimoto68: https://t.co/1km6dQIMmY
The application is open for the 2023 CoB-KIBM Scholars Program! Eligible @UCSanDiego undergraduates are invited apply, earn $7000 for 10 weeks of research this Summer! For more information: https://t.co/sLSE2oYKtN https://t.co/DayjYyP6OB
Extremely bummed they’re discontinuing Amazon smile. It wasn’t a huge % of our annual donations for @SkypeScientist, but it was reliable and a decent amount of money. We’re so small that a couple hundred bucks a quarter matters. Ugh.
@MelisandeMarie @Ximistry1 I do think there needs to be room to acknowledge all of the work people like @Ximistry1 are doing to support historically marginalized folks beyond this strike.
Ximena has done SO MUCH work to increase basic needs support at UCSD, by both policy changes and student advocacy.
@HeydonEmily@shengokai FWIW UC’s policy was drafted AFTER the postdoc union proposed their version. The UCOP policy doesn’t cover students.
I agree the proposal needs a lot of work, but I’m glad it gives me and other students an avenue to expand Title IX definitions of harassment.
Excited to see our collaboration with @bio_eclipse led by lab alum Dan Lorenz online at @naturemethods describing multiplexed barcoded eCLIP for mapping RNA binding protein-RNA sites at scale. Congrats current members @hermuba and @Krothamel https://t.co/9xFslVpTng
STEM grad students I've spoken to who haven't been striking or will stop (1) face serious retaliation like Unsatisfactory (2) can't advance on dissertation w/o their PI or group (3) can't live off strike pay or (4) don't care at all. This is what I'm up against as an organizer.
Many of my friends & coworkers have stopped, will stop, or never started striking. I'm voting yes bc I need to solidify the gains we've made thus far on wages & bullying/harassment protections (which many of us have tried & failed to create for yr via other channels) 🧵
