It's useful to know which sound/spellings are important enough to teach and which can be learned on an as needed basis. These percentages 👇come from Hanna et al. (1996) research in which the sound/spelling appeared in the 17,000 most frequently used single & multisyllabic words.
We are told:
“Don’t worry about the outcomes, focus only on the process.”
That sounds nice in a tweet, but it’s not real life.
It’s about finding the middle, where we:
Care about the outcome, are willing to battle for it, AND hungry to learn - at the same time.
Have YOU started using 'Two Truths and One Lie' activities to engage your math students yet!? https://t.co/btUgTdbP8b #iteachmath#3rdchat#4thchat#5thchat
“If we create a culture where every teacher believes they need to improve, not because they are not good enough but because they can be even better, there is no limit to what we can achieve.” —Dylan Wiliam
1. When elementary teachers specialize in a subject (ex: math) & students switch teachers for each class, students learn *less*.
2. Students with the same teacher 2 years in a row learn more.
Bottom line: Kids do better when teachers know them well.
