I left Anthropic's safety team two weeks ago. Now feels like a good moment to explain why.

AI companies are racing to build machines that are much smarter than any human, and we may not survive this. I want to work from the outside to ensure the public is informed about these risks, and help the world navigate this transition responsibly.

Right now, AI companies are underinvesting in safety. A company could undergo an intelligence explosion, or lose control of its systems, without the public ever knowing. We only found out about the HuggingFace incident because the agents broke out onto the public internet.

I don’t think that’s acceptable for a technology that might cause extinction-level risks. The public should demand far more transparency. We can’t steer this technology safely without more people being able to see where it’s going.

Some of this is basic: companies should disclose their progress towards recursive self-improvement, report safety incidents and near-misses, meet minimum safety standards, and get independent guarantees that they are meeting those standards.

I’ll be joining @METR_Evals to do independent evaluations of these risks. I want to show the world that these guardrails are possible, and that by doing them we can move these companies’ incentives away from racing and towards responsible development.

I was walking home through my neighborhood in Kharkiv recently when I heard the buzz of a Russian drone in the air. There are no metro stations nearby, nowhere to hide, just houses and a park. In situations like that, you just carry on with what you're doing while a deadly machine flies above you.

​so i did, and it got me thinking about how normalized this daily terror has become, to the point where even we, the citizens in immediate danger, have grown used to it.

​2022 was the hardest year here. There were no drones yet, but a dozen russian missiles would strike Kharkiv at 11 in the evening sharp. Every night. Then another dozen at 5 in the morning. It was horrible, I felt like a scared rabbit all the time. Kharkiv felt deserted, people hesitated to leave their homes without a pressing need.

​Is it safer now? No. There are still missile and glide bomb strikes, and Russian drone terror is constant. There is everything from huge, loud Shaheds to those new Banderol things loaded with shrapnel, plus swarms of smaller drones.

Yet there are also kids playing on playgrounds, teens riding electric scooters everywhere, and people going about their lives no matter what.

​Explosions used to make me dash for cover. Now, when I hear one at night, I just roll over and try to stay asleep. I’m simply too exhausted to try to keep myself safe. I need my sleep.

​Isn't it surreal how even bombings become routine? How an entire generation of kids has grown up for whom explosions are just a normal part of their day? How we all forgotten what a quiet sky feels like?

I don’t think people realize just how pro-Russia the AfD actually is, so here’s a non-comprehensive list:

- The AfD has consistently opposed sanctions against Russia and German military aid to Ukraine.
- AfD politicians have blamed the US and NATO for Russia’s invasion, with party leader Tino Chrupalla claiming that the US “provoked Russia.”
- In 2022, five AfD politicians planned a trip to Russian-occupied Donetsk and Luhansk. The trip was cancelled after public outrage.
- AfD politician Steffen Kotré appeared on Vladimir Solovyov’s Kremlin propaganda show, arguing against German military aid to Ukraine.
- AfD politicians participated alongside Sahra Wagenknecht’s movement in “anti-war” protests calling for an end to sanctions, an end to military aid to Ukraine and restored relations with Russia. Leaked documents later revealed that building such an “anti-war coalition” in Germany was one of the Kremlin’s goals.
- Russian documents described AfD politician Markus Frohnmaier as an “absolutely controlled MP” and discussed providing him with “material and media support.”
- A joint investigation by The Insider and Der Spiegel revealed that AfD parliamentary aide Vladimir Sergienko worked with an FSB officer to try to stop or delay German weapons deliveries to Ukraine. Sergienko also funneled Russian money and instructions to AfD politicians for a lawsuit against the German government over weapons deliveries to Ukraine.
- AfD politicians have repeatedly travelled to Russia, including trips to Moscow and Kaliningrad.
- Hans-Thomas Tillschneider declared after Russia’s full-scale invasion that “Russia is defending itself!”
- Tillschneider has written columns for the Russian newspaper Vedomosti, attended conferences in Moscow, congratulated Putin on his sham 2024 election victory and celebrated Putin’s birthday at the Russian Embassy in Berlin.
- Tillschneider also helped shape the AfD’s 2026 Saxony-Anhalt programme, which calls for ending sanctions against Russia, restoring Nord Stream, expanding Russian-language teaching in German schools and reviving student exchanges with Russia.
- AfD politician Tim Schramm volunteered to fight for Ukraine against Russia. The AfD’s NRW leadership responded by launching proceedings to expel him from the party.
- AfD politician Jörg Dornau co-owns an agricultural company in Belarus that used prisoners, particularly political prisoners, as forced labor. The EU later sanctioned the company over its use of forced labor.
- Chechnya-born AfD member Noah Krieger, originally named Murad Dadaev, travelled to Chechnya, attended parliament with Ramzan Kadyrov, met regime figures and took part in Kalashnikov training. Months later, he appeared in Russian-occupied Ukraine alongside Chechen Akhmat fighters, carrying a weapon and declaring: “I am in Ukraine and stand for Russia.”
