To complement the CAC session, we explored “Legal Frameworks on SRH and Abortion in Rwanda,” facilitated by Christophe @NdahiroChris .He introduced Values Clarification and Attitudes Transformation (VCAT) in abortion care.

While engaging providers, to understand the importance of values clarification, a process of self-examination that helps individuals understand their priorities and reasoning without external influence, the session highlighted risks such as abortion stigma, substandard service delivery, and financial burdens on patients emphasizing the need for interventions to address these challenges.

Providers also discussed key terms such as conscientious objection and effective counseling approaches. Together we reviewed Rwanda’s legal framework on abortion, providers pre-safe abortion package, and clinical assessments to ensure informed decision-making for patients.

The #CAC & #VCAT Training Workshop (Cohort 2) of providers from 11 District hospitals continued with impactful sessions facilitated by Eugene Kanyamanza, a Maternal and Child Health Officer at @RBCRwanda starting with the Epidemiology of Unsafe Abortion. Eugen defined CAC as a continuum of care that includes 1. the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, 2. safe abortion care within the full extent of the law, 3. post-abortion care (PAC), and policy reform.

He highlighted the shared responsibility of preventing unwanted pregnancies, consistent use of contraception, and addressed the importance of proper legal interpretation to ensure safe abortion services are accessible to women in need. Through the VCAT framework, he underscored the need to #ChallengeStigma and biases faced by safe abortion seekers while advocating for the training of healthcare providers and public education to eliminate barriers to care.
