PM @MarkJCarney outlines strict guardrails for the 24 Sussex crowdfunding campaign.
No corporate donations, a cap on individual contributions, and the Rideau Hall Foundation overseeing fundraising with no influence over design decisions.
Would you donate to restore 24 Sussex?
CBC REPORTER: "A third of the condos you're targeting for 'affordable housing' opportunities cost more than a million dollars. Who, exactly, is this program supposed to benefit?"
BC NDP HOUSING MINISTER: "These are the details we are working on."
Wait. What?
Now we are learning that’s it really @Dave_Eby pushing for the condo bailout. The province is covering 90% of the funds.
The guy who got elected villainizing the developers is now bailing them out. Ironic.
If they provided a set number of zero down payment mortgages, there would be very little pushback.
This program would do exactly that, while also securing a discounted home price to be passed along to the buyer.
This benefits the families buying these units, not developers.
Premier Eby seeks to clear the air “in the absence of the details” on the condo bailout:
“If you are a condo developer that took a bet on the high end of the market and you’re facing significant potential loss of profits, what we’re proposing will not assist you.”
BC Premier David Eby built his political brand criticizing developers and investors for sitting on empty homes.
Now, we learn it was his government that “initiated the idea” to bail out those same developers — with BC taxpayer funds — for refusing to drop prices on empty condos.
Ha, this is going to make people in B.C. even angrier, after province just yanked a billion-plus from non-profit builders who had projects cancelled that were already underway and on which the non-profits had already spent hundreds of thousands that is now up in smoke
@rrrobbberttt the ndp are 90% of 14b Eby,who just cancelled subsidized housing builds, requested the condo buyout for housing. Federal government is 10% So BC taxpayers are on the hook.Eby could reduce the charges to developers who commit to build affordable housing but chose this route
Everyone is having a lot of fun the last couple days dumping on developers, the federal government and B.C. NDP for the condo buyout/infrastruture assistance progam in a veriable "burn the witch" frenzy. That's in part because of the most tone-deaf messaging possible from govt
@Tablesalt13 Misleading. Eby requested this. 90% of the cost is funded by BC taxpayers. If Eby reduced the charges developers have to pay they would build more housing & reduced the cost of condos. Rent to own is not a new concept
The BC budget effectively pressed the pause button on the delivery of affordable housing and childcare at a time when these are two of the biggest issues facing cities. This will have significant impacts for our cities in the years ahead.

PM Carney's remarks on the controversial BC condo purchase program. He acknowledges the government has done a poor job of explaining what this is. New details: The program has a maximum budget of $1.45B, with 10% from the federal government and 90% from the province.
Ken Sim received one of the largest majorities in Vancouver history. After 4 years, 26% tax increases, and jet setting, nothing has improved.
📌 He tried to eliminate the integrity commissioner while under investigation by the integrity commissioner.
📌 He tried to abolish the democratically elected Park Board without a referendum.
📌 He campaigned on greater transparency but dramatically increased FOI fees.
📌 He had the poorest attendance record of any mayor in history.
But when he did show up to work, this is what he was doing (Courtesy of CBC):
Look what Nova Scotia manages to PUBLICLY report about it's primary care waiting list.
In BC? We get nothing. To get any data, we can wait for cherry-picked scraps from MOH or wait months for FOI requests.
Widespread lack of transparency is enabling health system failure in BC.
Mayors Brad West and Nicole MacDonald explain why the province's one-size fits all approach to zoning legislation has not worked and is not the solution to affordable housing. Local planning needs to be at the heart of everything we do.
