Do task engagement behaviors always mean the same thing?

We analyzed brain-to-brain synchrony during communicative tasks in which learners practiced vocabulary either before or after the task. When practice came BEFORE, richer engagement aligned with neural synchrony in social-cognitive regions—a marker of genuine collaboration. When it came AFTER, the very same co-constructive behaviors instead tracked with lower synchrony in language-processing regions, looking more like compensatory effort to cover lexical gaps.
