The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is California's largest taxpayer organization. We defend Proposition 13, which protects homeowners and taxpayers.
@Ryanexpress77@RoxanneHoge@TobinGilman@RealSteveBellow That is always a risk but they had to vote to put this on the ballot so it makes it harder for them. It also takes away the very real possibility that we could win and still lose with that poison pill initiative. Very good.
@Ryanexpress77@RoxanneHoge@TobinGilman@RealSteveBellow The compromise but it's the text from our initiative. It just doesn't have retroactivity on transfer taxes. It requires a 2/3rds for special taxes and got them to remove a poison pill initiative that could have stopped our initiative even if we passed it. It's a good day.
👍Odds of CA property tax reform (by fixing the Upland ruling) in November are now much better than before. I liked the transfer tax provision in Save Prop 13 too but it would have made passage less likely, maybe impossible. Kick the FG and put some points on the board.
Grateful to @HJTA for working with #caleg to uphold California's constitutional requirement for a two-thirds vote to pass local special taxes. #Prop13#HousingPolicy https://t.co/4IBK5hvfIi
@midpushMike@calwatch We are going forward. We forced the legislature to place a constitutional amendment to close the Upland loophole on the ballot and pull a poison pill initiative that would have made it very hard to pass.
This is a huge deal because it will stop most of the egregious voting-threshold shenanigans for local taxpayers since the flawed Upland decision. It's not perfect & doesn't solve every local tax measure or transfer tax problem, but @hjta did the taxpayers of California a huge favor today.
For those who wanted more, up your membership dues to HJTA & get involved earlier in the discussions. Better yet, vote for a different legislature.
Until that happens, my hat's off to @joncoupal & his valiant crew of taxfighters at HJTA. They are always in the fray & don't take their eye off the ball.
@calwatch Our understanding is negotiations are ongoing on transfer taxes (they just didn't like our .11 language) and we will certainly be fighting for a transfer tax fix.
@calwatch I don't think you realize how many of these Upland taxes (including Measure ULA) are hitting businesses. If our initiative had been in effect at the time, there would be no ULA and if our measure passes there will not be another ULA unless it can get 2/3rds. Also ...
@FlashReport@HJTA@joncoupal 100%. Armchair quarterbacks on here need to take a breather and read the legislation. I am confident that Jon got the most important piece(s) of Save Prop 13.
