New Jersey wanted Buc-ee’s. Booker killed it.

Senator Cory Booker is being called “directly responsible” for losing a deal with Buc-ee’s Travel Centers that would have brought billions in revenue and hundreds of jobs to the state.

In the final negotiations for a $2 billion plan to put two of the massive complexes on the New Jersey Turnpike, Booker refused to pressure the governor to sign a waiver allowing customers at Buc-ee’s locations to pump their own gas. New Jersey law still forbids self-service stations.

“It was a simple request he’s done before to get approval for self-service for campaign donors,” said Buc-ee’s spokesman Joe Barron. “He doesn’t like our owners or their politics.”

New Jersey was looking forward to Buc-ee’s. Booker is going to pay for this at the polls.

The new mail-in ballot procedure isn’t something to be afraid of. It works like this:

1. The state provides a list of the ballots they intend to mail out.

2. USPS assigns a unique barcode to each.

3. When the ballot is mailed out, this barcode is scanned to ensure uniqueness and that it matches. If there is no match or it’s a duplicate, it is not delivered.

4. When the voter mails the ballot back, the USPS scans it again and checks to make sure it matches what went out and isn’t a duplicate. Any ballots that don’t match won’t be delivered.

5. This is all done on the exterior envelope. The USPS isn’t determining eligibility or deciding who gets a ballot. They can’t see the actual votes. They are essentially just ensuring there are no duplicates, that the number mailed in isn’t greater than the number mailed out, and that the person mailing one in was the same person who received them.

This is a common sense solution and is completely reasonable.

Why would anyone oppose it unless their intention is to cheat?

Herbert Hoover, the 31st President of the United States, and his wife would speak fluent Mandarin Chinese to each other in the White House whenever they wanted a private conversation nobody around them could understand. They weren't showing off. Before politics, Hoover was a globe-trotting mining engineer who lived and worked in China, and both he and his wife Lou became fluent in Mandarin there. So decades later, standing in the White House surrounded by staff and guests, the President and First Lady could just switch to Chinese to gossip or trade secret comments in the middle of the room, and no eavesdropper had a clue.

His pre-presidency life was genuinely remarkable. Hoover was an orphan who worked his way up to become a self-made millionaire mining engineer, then walked away from business to become one of the greatest humanitarians of the century. During and after World War I, he organized food relief that saved something like nine million people in Belgium and France from starvation, and he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five separate times. As President, he refused to keep his salary and quietly gave all of it away to charity and to his own staff.

To stay in shape in office, he basically invented his own sport. His doctor came up with a brutal game called "Hooverball," a mix of volleyball and medicine ball where players hurl a heavy 6-pound ball over a high net. Hoover played it at 7 a.m. six days a week, rain or shine, with a rotating group of cabinet members and officials who got nicknamed his "Medicine Ball Cabinet."

Here's the tragic irony, though. For all his talent and genuine goodness, Hoover had the terrible luck of being President when the Great Depression hit. The economy collapsed, shantytowns full of homeless families sprang up across the country, and people bitterly named them "Hoovervilles" after him. One of the most capable, generous men ever to hold the office is mostly remembered for a disaster he couldn't stop.

So the real Herbert Hoover: spoke secret Mandarin in the White House, went from orphan to millionaire to a man who saved millions from starvation, gave away his entire salary, invented his own punishing morning sport, and still got his name slapped on the worst slums of the Depression.

That's a President.

Rome handed out free grain to 40,000 citizens in 73 BC. By 46 BC, Julius Caesar found 320,000 people lining up for their monthly ration. That eight-fold expansion happened in under three decades, and it shows you how welfare states actually grow.

No Roman senator stood up and announced a plan to addict a third of the city to government bread. It happened incrementally, through political competition. Each magistrate who wanted votes expanded eligibility. Each expansion normalized the next one. The citizen who once considered the dole shameful eventually expected it, then demanded it, then organized politically to protect it.

This is the core mechanism free market thinkers have identified across every era: once you create a transfer program, you create a constituency for that program. Recipients vote. Administrators build careers. Grain merchants who supply the state develop a stake in keeping the contracts flowing. The political economy locks in.

Caesar, to his credit, actually cut the rolls back to 150,000 through verification audits. It was one of his more economically coherent moves, though the Senate still murdered him. His successors quietly let the numbers climb again.

What did the dole require? Massive grain imports from Sicily, Sardinia, and Egypt, organized through state logistics at state expense, funded by taxation and conquest. When the conquest revenue dried up, the obligation remained. Rome had written a check against future military success, and future military success eventually failed to arrive.

The lesson is not complicated. Distribute a benefit and you distribute dependency. Distribute dependency and you distribute political power to whoever controls the distribution. The grain dole didn't weaken Rome overnight, but it made every subsequent reform politically impossible.

When Shohei Ohtani was a 15 year old high school freshman in rural Japan, he filled out a grid.

Nine squares across, nine squares down. Eighty one boxes.

In the center he wrote his goal: be drafted in the first round by all eight NPB teams.

Not one team. All eight.

That is roughly the equivalent of a high school freshman in America writing down that every single MLB franchise would take him first overall.

Then he broke it down.

Around that center goal he put eight pillars. The obvious ones were there. Building the body. Control. Sharpness. Speed of 160 kilometers per hour, which is about 100 miles an hour.

But look at the other four.

Mental. Humanity. Love of baseball.

And luck.

A 15 year old put LUCK in a box and then treated it as something he could work on.

Then he filled the outer 64 squares with the specific actions required for each pillar.

Under luck, he wrote things like picking up trash. Taking care of his equipment. Greeting people properly. Being thankful.

He decided that luck is not something that happens to you. It's something you earn by how you behave when nobody's watching.

That is why you see him picking up trash on major league fields. It isn't a PR move somebody invented for him. It's box 63 on a piece of paper he filled out at fifteen.

The framework is called a mandala chart, part of something called the Harada Method, developed by a Japanese junior high track coach who took a team ranked last out of 380 schools and made them number one in the region in three years.

Now here's what happened to the plan.

At 18, Ohtani was drafted in the first round by the Nippon-Ham Fighters, even though he had publicly asked Japanese teams not to draft him because he wanted to go straight to America.

He also wrote out a separate list of life goals by age.

Age 18: join an MLB team. Age 20: get called up. Age 26: win the World Series and get married.

He was late on that last one. He got married and won the World Series at 30.

Everything else, more or less, he hit.

Two-time MVP in Japan. Multiple MVPs in America. The first player in history with 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season. A $700 million contract. A World Series ring.

Harvard's business school now teaches his chart.

The most talented baseball player alive sat down at fifteen and wrote out, in 81 boxes, exactly who he intended to become.

Then he went and did it.
