(3/3) Hong Kong has used bamboo scaffolding for decades because it’s lightweight, highly flexible in strong winds, easy to assemble on irregular building façades, and extremely cost-effective.
The scaffold itself wasn’t the issue here. The netting material was.
I don’t quite understand where does this “bamboo scaffolding led to the fire” come from.
The bamboos scaffolding after the fire is still mainly intact. It’s the netting that’s flammable, not the bamboo scaffolding. It started with the netting, as multiple videos show.
Note to western journalists: don’t suck up PRC propaganda. Bamboo scaffolding is widely regarded as safe - a craft in Hong Kong of which they’re rightly proud. Early indications are that the netting was the cause of this tragedy.

Weeks after cutting a deal with Trump in the US, elite New York law firm Simpson Thacher faces another human rights scandal: senior counsel and former China head Celia Lam chaired the tribunal that banned @kevinkfyam from practicing law in Hong Kong—punishment for his pro-democracy activism.
Simpson Thacher loves to market its human rights credentials. This is the opposite.

The US gov't yesterday released its annual human rights reports, including on #HongKong. There are few surprises. In short, another miserable year: China & HK gov't "further dismantled HK's political freedoms & autonomy."

Remember: every guilty plea, every decision not to fight a case by any Hong Kong pro-democracy campaigner is NOT a real admission of guilt, but more a “what’s the point, let’s get it over with” thing.

Pathetic: an op-ed at @SCMPNews slams my @guardian interview as “misleading”.
Even more pathetic: he claims that “the national security law does not criminalise political advocacy or criticism of the authorities,” while so many people are in prison for exactly that. What a joke.
🧵In August, DC-based @TheWJP is co-hosting a #HongKong conference on corruption & the rule of law in #HK & #AsiaPacific. Paul Lam, HK Sec of Justice, just sanctioned by @StateDept, will give the keynote address...

We have to take this issue seriously. This deepfake video marks the beginning of the misuse of AI technology against Hong Kong dissidents as well as an experimental AI disinformation campaign that would errode community trust, freedom of expression and democracy.
