I am an ordinary Korean citizen deeply troubled by the worsening persecution of Christians around the world and by the growing threats to religious freedom in my own country. Because this issue is urgent, I am posting this open letter on X.

Religious freedom is the foundation of human dignity and a vital pillar of American national security. With full confidence in your long-standing leadership on behalf of persecuted believers, I appeal to you today.

More than seven months have passed since President Trump nominated Mark Walker as Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom on April 10, 2025, yet no confirmation hearing has been scheduled. This vacancy is inflicting real suffering on millions of persecuted Christians in China, the Korean Peninsula, Nigeria, and beyond. @RepMarkWalker

The Daily Caller (Nov 20) reported that the nomination remains stalled within Senate Republican ranks.

Former Ambassador Sam Brownback warned that such delays “greatly slow advancements in human rights, democracy, and national security” and gave Mark Walker his full endorsement.

On the same day, The Washington Times revealed that the Chinese Communist Party arrested 18 leaders of the underground Zion Church and nearly 30 pastors and staff across 10 cities in the past month alone.

Ambassador Brownback stated that Beijing “fears religious freedom more than American military power” and continues demolishing churches, removing crosses, banning Christian apps, and, starting in 2025, restricting all sermons to government-approved online formats.

The situation on the Korean Peninsula is equally grave:

North Korea remains the world’s worst persecutor of Christians in 2025, with up to 70,000 believers suffering torture, forced labor, and execution in political prison camps and an estimated 400,000 underground believers risking their lives daily.

In South Korea, conservative pastors—including Pastor Son Hyun-bo of Busan Segyeoro Church, arrested in September 2025—face intensifying investigations and raids on churches and pastors’ homes under election-law and other pretexts.

Christians being arrested in China, investigated in South Korea, and executed in North Korea have now waited more than 7 months for the United States to confirm a strong advocate like Mark Walker who can speak for them on the global stage.

Dear Senator Risch, I respectfully and urgently ask you to schedule Mark Walker’s confirmation hearing at the earliest possible date. Your decision is far more than procedural—it is a lifeline to countless believers suffering for their faith worldwide.

Thank you for your leadership and for standing with the persecuted.
