@cogniora4552 has spent the last 10 days raising awareness around cognitive health and yesterday we concluded with a webinar.
Huge thanks to our speakers Dr Eziafakaku and Esther Shittu, my cofounders Omolade and princess and the entire Cogniora team for making this possible.
Not everything we don’t understand is a sign. Sometimes, we just need to ask better questions and the right assessment.

My favorite thing to do while reading is getting to a mind-blowing scene and immediately going on social media or just going outside to get some fresh air 🤣
I want to go to the museum alone and just look at the pictures, but I know I’ll definitely want pictures of myself at some point, but I don’t have a tripod 🤦🏾♀️
one time i was annoyed by how the lift kept announcing each floor and my friend reminded me that blind people need it and I felt so ashamed. Sometimes we get truly blind to our privilege. just because something is not helpful for you doesn't mean some else won't need it.
Some Nigerian writers need to hear this with love.
If you’re writing about a culture that isn’t yours, whether it’s Northern Nigeria, Southern Nigeria, or even Nigeria as a whole, please, for the love of good literature, DO YOUR RESEARCH.
Because what do you mean a northerner had jollof rice and pap for breakfast? 😭 Who is waking up at 7 a.m. to eat jollof rice and pap?
And to my diasporan authors… I love you, but what do you mean they’re eating suya and plantain for breakfast? Please point me to this household because I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve never met these people. 😭
Google is free. YouTube is free. Nigerians are literally everywhere online. Ask questions. Read blogs. Watch vlogs. Find beta readers from the region you’re writing about. We promise we don’t bite.
Nothing pulls readers out of a story faster than a character from Kano behaving like they’re from Port Harcourt, or someone from Enugu casually speaking like they grew up in Sokoto, with absolutely no explanation.
You don’t have to know everything. But if you’re going to borrow someone’s culture, at least return it in one piece. 😂
And if you can’t get the details right after trying… there’s no shame in writing what you actually know. Every part of Nigeria has stories worth telling.
Signed,
A tired Nigerian reader who just wants culturally accurate breakfast scenes. 😭✋🏽
Instead of stressing over that ever-growing stack of unread books, think of your bookshelf as a wine cellar. You're just collecting books to be read at the right time, the right place and the right mood.
