Let me go ahead and clear this up — because if we’re gonna talk about HB 201, let’s talk about what it actually does. And yes, I was happy to carry it.

HB 201 gives Virginians the ability to register in person all the way through Election Day — but it still requires you to be qualified to vote in that locality. That means age, citizenship, and yes… residency.

So this idea that out-of-state students are just waltzing in, registering ‘on the spot,’ and flipping elections? That’s not how the law works. Virginia has long held that students can claim residency where they actually live — dorms included — if that’s their bona fide residence. HB 201 didn’t change that; it just removed unnecessary hurdles for eligible voters.

And let’s not skip this part: same-day registration in Virginia still runs through the proper checks. Nobody’s getting a magic ballot.

So if we’re gonna talk about fairness, let’s start by being fair to the facts — because HB 201 expands access for eligible Virginians, not whoever shows up with a backpack and a pulse.
