MIHR and @hrrleague call for the creation of a global mechanism for the non-recognition of unlawful 🇷🇺 verdicts against 🇺🇦 This is stated in our joint submission to the @UN_HRC . The document concerns verdicts issued by Russian courts and quasi-legal system in the temporarily occupied territories against Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians.

Such so-called trials often take place with gross violations of the right to a fair trial: without proper defence, with the use of fabricated evidence or testimony obtained under pressure, and after the unlawful transfer of people from the occupied territories to the Russian Federation.

⁉️ Why does this matter? Because these verdicts may have consequences beyond Russia. The Russian Federation may try to use them internationally, through Interpol, extradition requests, or mutual legal assistance mechanisms of other states.

📣 That is why we urge foreign governments not to recognize such decisions automatically and not to use them as grounds for detention, extradition, or international search of Ukrainians. The key demand of the submission is to create a global mechanism for the non-recognition of Russian verdicts against Ukrainian citizens in cases related to the war.

The international community must state clearly: Russian “courts” in such cases are not justice, but an instrument of persecution. Recognizing them abroad would mean legitimizing war crimes and crimes against humanity.➡️ The link to the text of the statement https://t.co/M0bPzjQtqP
