A thread: My client got out of 30 years of prison about 6 weeks ago. Since then, people have been telling him that forms he needs are on the web or that they would email something to him. A few days ago, he shyly admitted to me that he doesnt understand what any of that means.
G&K’s point about grading possibly impeding on writing improvement struck me because I know that, in secondary school, I was afraid to deviate from formulaic writing for fear of losing my precious ‘A’ student status. Not experimenting hurt me as a writer for sure #ENG350

I’m currently working on an essay due tonight, and I am SO proud of my writing so far. This reminds me of the importance of students taking pride and ownership of their work and writing. #ENG350
The idea of introducing narrative writing at the beginning of the year is an idea that I never thought of, but I think that is such a good idea!! Narrative writing involves so many transferable skills to other genres and also really helps us build connections w students! #ENG350
Absolutely agree! It's impossible to be a good writer if you don't read a LOT. Reading is a powerful tool that teaches a lot - without you even noticing it! #ENG350
poetry is also a genre many students are uncomfy reading or writing within, so all the more reason to implement it into a safe space, like our future classrooms! #ENG350
i couldn’t agree more with G&K ‘s discussion of a poetry unit. i designed a poetry unit for my EDPS 390 class last semester, and creating it really opened my eyes to how interdisciplinary and multi-purpose the study of poetry is. #ENG350

#ENG350 “you learn to read by reading and you learn to write by reading” - Frank Smith
yes!! it is impossible to entirely separate the teaching of reading and writing when exceeding in one of them is so intrinsically linked to doing well in the other !
I enjoy reading something that is going to expand my worldview or change the way I see a certain topic, something that is going to help make me a more empathetic member of society. #ENG350
