Hillenbrand, a covert pro-fluoride operative at the American Dental Association, was appointed as the 1st dental advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO). Within a decade, the WHO promoted fluoride as a public health measure. Hillenbrand had no fluoride expertise.
๐งต12. Routine ways of the era to settle controversies were not adopted; no experts were invited; no symposium was organized. Instead, Hillenbrand, who had no interest in scientific queries took responsibility for a major 20th century decision; to accept fluoride as a therapeutic.
๐งต 1. Starting in 1944, the Sugar Industry championed fluoride as necessary to prevent dental decay. The American Dental Association (ADA) opposed fluoride, citing toxicity concerns. Hillenbrand, ADA editor, breached ADA policies and took it upon himself to settle this conflict.
๐งต 11. The ADA CDT decided to side with the ghostwritten editorial. During the busy 2-day meeting McCauley wrote a paragraph that fluoride was accepted. Concerns on the implications of accepting fluoride (by Lyons) for the FDA, industry, and press led to the closing paragraph.
The Sugar Research Institute was the first organization to promote fluoride as an essential nutrient. The scientific council at American Dental Association (ADA) had the opposite position - that the potential harms of fluoride outweighed its benefits.
@POH_Smiles@PFPC10 Thank you for the quick reply. Is there a reference to an organization listing fluoride as a necessary nutrient prior to the Sugar Research Institute?
@PFPC10 Interesting. ๐๐ป Never knew about the National Fertilizer Association. Makes sense has it is my understanding they contributed significantly to the total fluoride intake in the USA.
Internal records show that private interests, not public interests, captured the WHO dental-health agenda from the very beginning in 1948. The first dentist to advise the WHO on dental issues was (1) perceived as very helpful by the Sugar Research Foundation, and (2) privately took full responsibility to reverse the American Dental Associationโs position on fluoride from harmful to safe.
WHO comments on United States announcement of intent to withdraw
The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization.
WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the worldโs people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go.
The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has participated in shaping and governing WHOโs work ever since, alongside 193 other Member States, including through its active participation in the World Health Assembly and Executive Board.
For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO.
With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues.
We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.
