gonna steelman the anti-AI ppl here and say that it's bc they believe it's evil; to them, it's probably of similar moral repugnance as CSAM, the latter which we should have policy to control what other ppl do with computers. they also seem to generally believe that they're building data centers to create a surveillance state, etc, which if true, would also make sense to have policy against.
