❗️ Benchmarks show the 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max becomes as slow as an SD card due to its QLC memory. The $600 cheaper 256GB model uses TLC and is way faster.

HOMOLAB found the 1TB's QLC storage falls from 3,000+ MB/s to an average of 79.4 MB/s once its caches fill, dipping to 1.1 MB/s at 60% full.

❗️Under a secret order, the UK wants Apple to build a backdoor into its encrypted iCloud backups. Apple is refusing, and fighting it in court.

Britain's first attempt covered Americans' data too. Washington pushed back, and it was withdrawn — then the Home Office issued a new one, narrowed to UK users only. Apple filed against it at the Investigatory Powers Tribunal last month.

Britons have had no Advanced Data Protection since February 2025: the opt-in setting that end-to-end encrypts iCloud photos, notes and backups. Apple pulled it rather than comply.

By Apple's own account, UK users are now the only ones in the world who can't switch it on. Their photos and backups sit on servers Apple can unlock — and hand over on a valid legal request...

We just had an emergency family meeting. I had to explain to them that we’ll be selling our family car in order to afford the next generation Mac Mini when it gets released. I told them that’s the only way we’ll be able to run AI models now that all the AI labs are getting de facto nationalized, plus we can always use the public transportation. Tim Cook is likely to step down as Apple’s CEO

According to Bloomberg, John Ternus, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, is expected to take over.

Bloomberg notes that Apple now likely needs an engineer rather than a sales or operations specialist. While the company expanded significantly under Cook’s leadership, it has struggled to break into new tech categories such as virtual reality, generative AI, smart home devices, and autonomous vehicles.

Ternus reportedly stands out among other potential successors. After stepping down, Cook may remain as chairman of Apple’s board — a path previously taken by leaders like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.
