Exclusive | Al Jazeera Dismisses Gaza-Based Journalists After Two Years on the Front Lines

Gaza 24 Live has learned that Al Jazeera has terminated the contracts of several Gaza-based correspondents, producers, and camera operators following the ceasefire. Sources familiar with the matter told Gaza 24 Live that the dismissals were implemented without prior notice.

Among those affected is cameraman and producer Mahmoud Shalha, who worked extensively in northern Gaza and contributed to numerous reports broadcast by Al Jazeera correspondents, including Anas Al Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqea, and Ismail Al Ghoul.

Shalha was reportedly injured several times while covering the conflict but continued working throughout the war despite significant risks. His experience reflects that of many Gaza-based journalists who operated under extraordinary conditions to document events on the ground.

The decision has sparked concern and criticism within media circles, particularly as many of those dismissed were among the network’s frontline field staff during the conflict, enduring considerable personal and professional hardships while reporting from the war zone.

The move has also renewed debate over compensation, welfare, and duty-of-care policies for journalists working in Gaza. Current and former media workers have raised concerns about what they describe as disparities in support and compensation mechanisms for Gaza-based journalists compared with colleagues covering other conflict zones, especially regarding workplace injury compensation and assistance for the families of journalists killed while on assignment.

According to accounts from several media workers, some families of journalists who died during the war lost their primary source of income after salary payments ceased following their deaths. The issue has prompted calls from media and human rights advocates for a review of protections and social support policies for journalists operating in conflict areas, including stronger guarantees for their families in cases of injury or death while performing their duties.

I’ve reported the community note for being misleading and failing to include context that IDF soldiers have admitted to raping children on multiple authentic video interviews.

Im not telling you to report it. Im saying that I have reported the Community Note for being misleading and lacking critical context.

It should include that context as it is very important. The current community note attempts to wash the rape charges we are bringing against the IDF in court.

There are documented testimonies, public statements, and recorded interviews involving allegations against IDF personnel that deserve to be examined seriously, not selectively ignored.

Instead of presenting balanced context, the note appears designed to dismiss or minimize allegations currently being discussed publicly and legally.

If Community Notes are going to position themselves as “fact checks,” then they must apply the same standards consistently to all sides, not selectively shape narratives around politically sensitive topics.

I urge X to review the contributors and approval process behind notes placed on my posts to ensure neutrality, transparency, and integrity.
