A toddler’s life behind bars, the harsh reality of arrests in lieu in Nigeria💔
In November 2025, we met Margaret, an incarcerated young mother whose 2-year-old son has never experienced life outside the walls of the correctional facilities in Kurmawa and Goron Dutse of Kano State, not because she is guilty of any crime, but because she was arrested in lieu of someone when she was only a month pregnant with him!
While we’ve taken on the case through our partners, this encounter reveals the sharp contrast between policies and their effective implementation within the criminal justice system where illegal practices like arrests in lieu and similar provisions in state laws still persist.
To further address such illegalities, the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) Programme @RoLACNG is advancing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) through targeted advocacy, capacity-building for justice actors and educative entertainment work like “Abokin Kowa” to enlighten citizens and the general public on their rights and pathways to justice👌
Watch out for the second part of “Abokin Kowa” as it addresses more gaps in Nigeria’s justice system.
