As long as the Land Use Act retains governors as custodians of our land, a power not even the President can contest, no capitalist in this country will ever hold the advantage over a governor. It is a different form of power, and Cersei Lannister settled this argument years ago when Littlefinger told her that knowledge is power. She had her guards seize him, called them off, and then told him, “Power is power.” Everything else is negotiation.

Yahaya Bello shut down the Obajana plant, Dangote’s largest cement facility, just a few years ago, with the state assembly backing him. A plant of that scale sat idle for months and the richest man in Africa had to run to Abuja for cover, pleading for intervention, and the truth is that if Yahaya Bello had set out to play dirty, and with the Land Use Act on his side, it would have been something else entirely.

Only a few months ago, the head of a single regulatory agency got Dangote visibly rattled in public, and that is someone in an appointive position. Now imagine the Governor of Lagos State, where his investments are based, moved against him. Imagine a governor revoking the certificates of occupancy on the land carrying the refinery, the fertiliser plant and the port, citing overriding public interest, which the Act permits. That would be the end of an empire.

Yes, political power ends. So does money. Politicians have buried plenty of billionaires whose names mean nothing to anyone under thirty today. But enough of the worst case scenario. Dangote is an asset of this nation, of the continent, and of the Black race. We should pray that he is never tested by political power, because we already know how that test ends. 😄

Very insightful piece I wrote two years ago

1. (On politics) I was once in a conversation with an elderly friend of mine who is American. He is deeply involved in politics in the States and I asked about what he had learnt. He said, "our movement pushed and mobilised and we got (.........) into the white house."

2. "However, we saw that our interests were not executed by him then we realised in a democratic setting sometimes its the people that surround the president or anyone in executive positions that really matter. Those he speaks to first and last.
We therefore changed our strategy"

3. We do support but now with the intent of placing people around the elected officers.
There is a lot of space for influence in positions that are non elective. Every executive leader leans on people to help in developing ideas and in executing them.

4. The young folks should be looking here. Elective positions like Governorship etc can be very expensive. Legitimate costs will run into hundreds of millions but there are positions for assistants, tech advisers, etc that wield alot of influence in shaping policy and direction.

5. If you want to change things you must get your foot into the room and have a seat at the table. The least position there will wield more power than being an critic on the outside. In positions like this skill, loyalty and confidentiality are the requirements and not money.

6. Important when you have access it mustn't be used for photo ops. You cannot afford to be loud. The biggest influencers of policy in a democratic setting build their power by being invisible. You feel their effect but their faces are not seen.

7. Someone once told an ex President of United States that even though Martin Luther King Jnr marched on the streets he needed people around President Johnson to move & sign the civil rights Bill. This is why you should never attack other young people who have a seat at the table

8. They are their for a purpose and one day you will need them as Mordecai told Esther you are in the kingdom for such a time as this. Not all people who are not loud have bowed to the system and nobody has a monopoly on patriotism
