The #IARCMonographs📙 programme identifies #cancer hazards.
This is different from cancer risk.
A cancer hazard is capable of causing cancer under some circumstances.
Cancer risk is the probability cancer will occur based on the routes & levels of exposure to the hazard
There are moments in life that will always stay with you. My visit to #Mongolia's National Center for Maternal and Child Health in Ulaanbaatar was one such moment.
Every day, the Center protects and improves the lives of women and children. And we at @WHO recognize its leadership in one of the most challenging areas of health - childhood cancer.
In Mongolia, ~100 to 120 children are diagnosed with cancer each year, and hundreds more continue treatment or long-term follow-up.
Behind each number is a child, a family, and a story of courage.
The most common cancers - leukaemia, brain tumours, lymphoma - are serious. But many are treatable and even curable, especially when detected early and managed well.
And yet, too often, a child’s chance of survival still depends not on science, but on access - to diagnosis, medicines, quality care.
In 2018, WHO launched the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer to improve survival and reduce suffering for children everywhere.
Together with partners such as @StJudeResearch and @UNICEF, we've worked to ensure that lifesaving cancer medicines reach the children who need them most.
Mongolia has shown strong leadership by joining these efforts early and turning global commitments into real action.
Since 2023, with strong support from the Ministry of Health and partners, important progress has been achieved. Essential cancer medicines are now being provided. Health workers’ capacity has been strengthened. Systems for diagnosis, referral and treatment have improved.
Today, children in Mongolia are being diagnosed earlier, treated more consistently and cared for more comprehensively.
But children need more than medicines. They need care that's compassionate, continuous and centred on the family. They need psychosocial support. They need to continue learning, playing, and dreaming - even during treatment. Because every child deserves not just to survive - but to live fully.
On behalf of WHO, sincere appreciation to the Ministry of Health, the leadership and staff of this Centre, and all health professionals across Mongolia.
I thank our partners for their strong collaboration.
I thank communities, families and parents whose strength and love are at the heart of every child’s journey.
And to the children, including those I met at the Center, thank you. Your courage inspires us.
I have seen this myself as a doctor in my homeland Tonga. Some of the smallest patients were the bravest people I have ever met. They prove that strength isn't about size - it's about spirit.
We'll continue working to ensure no child is left behind because of where they are born. Because ending childhood cancer inequity is not just a medical issue; it's a matter of fairness, dignity and humanity.
