During @IARC Gouverning Council 27-28 Mai, Switzerland reaffirmed its support to IARCs crucial work on cancer research.🇨🇭 congratulates IARC for its scientific excellence since 60 years & looks fwd to continuing the collaboration under the new Mid-term Strategy 2026-2030.
In Bern 🇨🇭, I had a valuable exchange with Ms Anne Lévy, Director-General of the Federal Office of Public Health, and Ambassador for Global Health Barbara Schedler Fischer – on WHO’s transformation, the future of global health cooperation, and the role Switzerland continues to play in supporting both.
We stressed the importance of a more coherent global health architecture – one that reduces fragmentation while protecting WHO’s essential normative and science-based role.
Our discussion also highlighted the strength of @WHO's partnership with Switzerland, including on health security, patient safety, and the health-and-peace agenda, with clear opportunities to build even closer cooperation in the period ahead.
I appreciated Switzerland’s recognition of @WHO_Europe forward-looking and practical ways of working, and its view that these may offer useful lessons more broadly.
Today is International #HealthDay! When it comes to health, we’re all connected: #GlobalHealth🌍 is our health💙. International engagement means better preparedness, faster response, fairer access to care, shared knowledge and expertise and thus a healthier future for everyone.

As the birthplace of multilateralism and the Geneva Conventions, and the home of both the World Health Organization and the International Committee of the Red Cross, #Geneva is the city where peace and health meet.
There is no health without peace, and no peace without health.
On the sideline of #EB158 I met with Ambassador Barbara Schedler Fischer, Switzerland’s Global Health Ambassador @BAG_INT, to discuss the growing humanitarian and health challenges facing the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
I expressed deep appreciation for Switzerland’s principled leadership and continued support to @WHO’s emergency operations, including in Gaza and other fragile settings.
We discussed the importance of moving beyond emergency response to strengthen preparedness, resilience and health security, protecting health gains and reducing future costs. We also explored partnerships to improve access to quality medical products, advance regulatory capacity with support from @Swissmedic_, and strengthen collaboration to address shared health threats across the @WHOEMRO Region.
Our exchange also highlighted the need for a stronger, more coordinated global health architecture, rooted in country ownership and sustainable investment.
#Partners4Health
On the margins of #EB158, I met with 🇨🇭Global Health Ambassador Barbara Schedler Fischer, who welcomed @WHO_Europe’s reshaping and our clear communication around it.
We agreed that @WHO needs to be clear about its role at each level, focus on what only #WHO can do – setting norms & guidance - and help countries put them in practice.
We also stressed the importance of showing tangible results – from the normative work to emergency and recovery efforts, including in #Ukraine – so that parliaments, on behalf of taxpayers, can clearly see WHO’s impact and value.
