The only time it breaks down is in an emergency/accident, everyone's driving becomes unpredictable and the automation can't handle it.
Increasing productivity in one area means people are incentivized to do more of that thing -- possibly to the point where it starts reducing overall productivity. E.g. computerization has dramatically increased the amount and length of documents companies generate, and the number of jobs that consist purely of handling documents.
@Chimpburner @revhowardarson I don't think he could become better than Kasparov in anything less than centuries, but he could become good enough at it to beat him if he makes a blunder, so maybe one in several thousand games?
@Chimpburner @revhowardarson IMO the guy has nothing to do all day but play/think about chess, he would eventually brute force first the obvious traps, then the underlying principles. Calculation would also improve.
He would need to learn the meta-skill of retaining enough information to be useful, though.
@Chimpburner @revhowardarson Presumably you would, over an infinite timeline, become expert enough at chess to beat him. The question is how long would it take with no outside resources? Decades?
@Youngblai @AggiesRevenge Chancellorsville wasn't even a win in attrition terms, with the Union losing a lower percentage of their army than the South did of theirs. Lee also lost his best junior commander.
@mechanical_monk En passant rarely comes up though; you might have the opportunity once every 4-5 games, at most.
If you consider that amateur players might only play that many games per year, mostly against other amateurs, it's not so weird.
