In the spring of 1980, Farrokhroo Parsa — Iran’s Minister of Education before the Islamic Revolution — was executed. She had devoted her life to fighting for women’s rights and did not betray her principles even after the victory of the Islamic Revolution. In the verdict issued by the new authorities, she was found guilty of “spreading corruption on earth and denying Allah.”
“I would rather face death with open arms than live in disgrace, forcibly covered with a veil. I will not kneel before those who expect me to repent for half a century of my struggle for equality between men and women. I am not prepared to wear the chador and take a step backward in history,” Parsa wrote in her farewell letter to her children.

The Pacific Ocean is the hottest it’s been in a century.
A vast marine heat wave – nicknamed “the blob” – is back, and it’s bigger than ever.
Once confined to the northeast Pacific, this year’s blob now spans the entire ocean basin, stretching nearly 5,000 miles (8,000 km) from Japan to California. The water is so abnormally hot that Japan experienced its highest temperature on record – 107.2°F (41.8°C). And on the U.S. West Coast, that heat is fueling humidity, disrupting winds, and threatening to reshape the coming winter’s weather.
This isn’t just a warm patch. It's the most expansive marine heat wave ever recorded in the North Pacific for August, with sea surface temperatures smashing century-old records.
And scientists are worried. Repeated events like this suggest something deeper: the North Pacific is warming faster than any other ocean on Earth, supercharged by greenhouse gases and shifting wind patterns that suppress the natural upwelling of cooler water from below.
That’s bad news for marine life. In 2015, a similar blob led to massive die-offs of seabirds, sea lions, and fish in Alaska. This year, smaller but widespread deaths are already being reported. Many species, like the common murre, still haven’t recovered from past heat waves. If this one sticks around, the damage could deepen.

This week, I returned to a country where I served as a young ‘cooperante’ with Save The Children Fund - Moçambique - to advocate with government, UN agencies, NGOs, civil society and communities for increased attention to Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA). 1/4
