Global Witness unethical reporting on Rwanda fuels farther tensions in a conflict-ridden region.
The latest claims by @Global_Witness (GW) that "Rwanda smuggles Congo's coltan" rely on disinformation, approximations, and on manipulated images farther fueling tension in a conflict-ridden region.
To exemplify this statement, GW uses image manipulation suggesting that coltan is smuggled to Rwanda with an image extracted from the UNGoE 2024 final report, i.e., a screenshot of a December 2023 video showing 60 motorbikes carrying #FDLR_Wazalendo, and loaded with bags of coltan, while fleeing M23 from #Rubaya towards #Mushaki. (p. 10 of the report, GW Interactive Map, Images #1, #2, and full original video below).
GW uses this image to suggest that the smugglers are #M23 or working on behalf of Rwanda. Yet in the enclosed video, we hear that these are #FDLR_Wazalendo fleeing from M23 while saying in Swahili (00:31-00:37): "Here are motorbikes loaded with minerals. We are leaving Rubaya and are really fleeing the Tutsi" [The "Tutsi" here means "M23"]. "Here we are in the hills of Ishasha, and here in front of us, we can see the motorbikes", "Here the situation is difficult, pray for us, pray for us!"
GW additionally spreads a mistruth about having been on the ground in the caption of the same image in the interactive map. They write: "Global Witness has travelled with a coltan smuggler through the hills towards Goma." (Image #2). GW in other words mislead its readers about having done a field investigation for this report, but instead relies on recycled manipulated information and images.

A new @HRW "report" backs regime propaganda following meeting with Kinshasa authorities
Human Rights Watch just released a new "report" following a visit paid to Kinshasa authorities last month.
The HRW delegation included its Executive Director, Philippe Bolopion @Bolopion, and its main reporter on the Great Lakes, Clémentine de Montjoye @demontcl.
Bolopion and Montjoye had in-person meetings with the #DRC Prime Minister Judith Siminwa, and the #DRC Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita.
During the same visit to Kinshasa, Clementine de Montjoye was seen in a workshop organized by @ebuteli led by hate group @luchaRDC's founder @fredbauma90 (Fred Bauma), American academics @jasonkstearns (Jason K. Stearns) and @jdlzw (Joshua Z. Walker), and former Africa Director of the think-tank @CSIS, Mvemba Dizolele (@MvembaDizolele). All four have been documented to be Rwandophobic, for promoting anti-Tutsi xenophobia, as well as, for engaging in unethical research methods.
@Ebuteli, based in Kinshasa—where systematic and daily violations of freedom of speech, of press, and of human rights have been widely documented, where thousands of journalists and human rights activists have been killed, imprisoned or abducted, by the Tshisekedi regime—is a close collaborator of #DRC Communications Minister @PatrickMuyaya, known for having invested millions of U.S. dollars in an anti-AFC/M23, anti-Rwanda and anti-Tutsi war propaganda campaign.
Owing to the ongoing collaboration with the DRC regime, party to the ongoing conflict in eastern #DRC, and Ebuteli, @hrw and its "reports" are selective, unethical and thus lack any scientific credibility.

Angola dumps Tshisekedi over lack of commitment handling DRC crisis
🔴In another serious diplomatic blow for Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, Angola has withdrawn from its role as mediator in the inter-Congolese dialogue, citing Kinshasa’s repeated failure to honour commitments aimed at resolving the prolonged crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) eastern regions.
🔴The decision underscores growing regional frustration with Tshisekedi’s approach to peace, which critics argue prioritises military confrontation over genuine negotiation.

Washington’s blind spot in DRC https://t.co/crehuchTl7 via @TheGreatLakesE1
If Washington continues to shield Kinshasa from accountability, eastern DRC’s crisis may not end in negotiation, but in rupture; driven by a population exhausted by war, hunger, disease, and militia rule.
Here’s why Tshisekedi funds militia commanders as clashes escalate
🔹Fresh concerns are mounting over Kinshasa’s growing reliance on Wazalendo - “patriots” in Swahili – militias, following reports that Brig. Gen. Fabien Dunia Kashindi, the commander of the FARDC’s 33rd Military Region, recently met Wazalendo commanders operating in Uvira Territory and handed them USD 70,000.
🔹Made up of – among others – local self-defense militias formed in villages and communities, and former fighters from earlier armed groups who switched sides, the Wazalendo are not formally part of the regular army, FARDC, but many operate in coordination with it. They are not a single organized army, but a loose umbrella label used in eastern DRC for pro-government local militias that Kinshasa mobilized to fight the M23 rebellion which resurged in late 2021 and has since expanded its territorial control. The rebels are fighting to protect Congolese Tutsi communities and other minorities and defend against hostile militias operating in the region such as the Rwandan genocidaires known as FDLR.
🔹The cash delivery comes amid worsening insecurity in eastern DRC and follows the recent visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita to Uvira on May 24.
🔹Officially, Kabombo’s mission was to assess the security situation and review FARDC operations in South Kivu. Local reports indicate that he visited the headquarters of the Uvira operational sector and attended a briefing with officials from the 33rd Military Region.
🔹Sources say the funds given to Wazalendo commanders originated from Kabombo’s visit and were intended to boost morale among militia commanders as fighting intensifies. The episode has revived a deeper and more urgent question: why does President Félix Tshisekedi continue to place Wazalendo militias at the center of the security crisis in eastern DRC?
🔹Kinshasa portrays the Wazalendo as “patriotic” local defenders fighting to protect their communities and land. However, critics argue that this marker masks a dangerous proxy strategy. By relying on irregular armed groups rather than exclusively on formal FARDC units, the Congolese state can benefit militarily from militia operations while attempting to distance itself from abuses committed on the ground.

Constitutional reform or third-term strategy? DRC enters political crisis mode
✍🏻President Félix Tshisekedi’s push for constitutional reform has moved beyond a technical debate about institutions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It has become a national stress test of trust in leadership, political timing, and intent. What his camp presents as an effort to modernize the 2006 Constitution is increasingly seen by opponents as a calculated opening toward a third-term strategy.
✍🏻As 2028 approaches, Tshisekedi faces a defining choice. He can safeguard his legacy by respecting the two-term limit and focusing on security, governance, and recovery. Or he can gamble on constitutional engineering and risk being remembered as another Congolese president who tested the patience of a wounded nation.

Insurrection fears: Ndayishimiye orders arms relocation as rift deepens within Burundi’s army
🔴Burundi’s military has begun relocating ammunition and heavy weaponry away from key bases in Bujumbura in a major strategic shift, amid growing unease within President Évariste Ndayishimiye’s security establishment. The movement of arms signals heightened concern over internal stability following recent disruptions in the country’s military command structure.
🔴On April 24, around 50 military trucks transported ammunition and equipment from the Burundi National Defense Force’s Muha and Muzinda military camps in Bujumbura Province, as well as from the Mwaro Artillery Brigade camp in Gitega Province, to FDNB’s 3rd Battalion Commando Camp in Gitega town.
🔴The sudden transfer comes less than a month after the catastrophic destruction of Burundi’s main military ammunition depot at Musaga in Bujumbura on March 31. That explosion exposed not only serious security failures within the army, but also deep contradictions at the highest levels of the state.

Another name, same failure: Swan and MONUSCO
🔹️James Swan, an American diplomat and senior United Nations official with long experience in African diplomacy, conflict mediation, and peacekeeping leadership, arrives at the UN mission in DRC (MONUSCO) carrying the usual diplomatic cargo: experience, composure, and the promise of a fresh start.
🔹️Swan effectively took up his role as head of MONUSCO in March 2026, taking over from Bintou Keita, a Malian diplomat and senior United Nations official who led the mission during a period (2021–2026) of rising insecurity in eastern DRC and growing public hostility toward UN peacekeepers.
🔹️Swan is not new to DRC – having served as U.S. Ambassador to the country from 2013 to 2016 – or to large, difficult UN missions, but there is little reason to believe that the former UN Special Representative for Somalia (2019–2022) can turn the mission around, because MONUSCO’s central problem is not the identity of the man at the top. It is the institution itself.

Tenez.
The nationality double game: Tshisekedi and DRC’s constitutional contradiction
▫️Under the amended DRC Constitution, Congolese nationality is defined as “one and exclusive,” explicitly prohibiting dual citizenship. The same constitutional framework also requires any presidential candidate to possess “Congolese nationality of origin.” Yet current Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi is widely reported to hold Belgian nationality.
▫️Although the ban on dual citizenship has often been unevenly enforced in practice, including in cases involving public officials, it has remained a potent political and legal issue in DRC. For some candidates, questions of nationality have become grounds for exclusion, controversy, or sustained public attack.
▫️Tshisekedi navigated these challenges by concealing his Belgian nationality. Sources claim he acquired Belgian citizenship during his family’s years in exile in Belgium, the former colonial power.
