Fidel Castro awarding Thomas Sankara the Order of Jose Marti, 1984.
When Thomas Sankara looked beyond Burkina Faso for inspiration, he did not just see ideology. He saw examples of how a country could assert its independence, invest in its people, and challenge global systems that kept developing nations dependent. Cuba, shaped by its own revolution, became one of those reference points. But the connection between Sankara and Cuba was not only political. It was deeply historical and cultural.
When Sankara visited Cuba, he was awarded the Order of José Martí, one of the country’s highest honors. It reflected a shared vision of sovereignty, dignity, and resistance against exploitation. Cuba recognized in Sankara a leader who was trying to reshape his nation on principles of self reliance, anti imperialism, and social justice.
During that visit, Cuban leader Armando Hart spoke about the historical ties between Cuba and West Africa. He reminded the audience that millions of Africans were taken to the Caribbean through the transatlantic slave trade. Their labor, culture, and resilience became part of the foundation of Cuban society. This history created a connection that went beyond diplomacy. It was a link built through struggle, survival, and cultural continuity.
They won’t teach you this in school: Germans wiped out 80% of the Herero population and 50% of the Nama population of Namibia 🇳🇦 between 1904 and 1908.

#KWIBUKA32: How Paul Kagame allegedly TRIGGERED the Rwandan Genocide – according to the BBC’s own 2014 investigation “Rwanda: The Untold Story”:
Kagame publicly talked about peace. He sat at the table for the 1993 Arusha Accords. Habyarimana (Hutu president) was pressured by the West to share power with the Tutsi RPF.
But behind the scenes, the RPF was preparing for war. They infiltrated ~2,000 officers & men into the Rwandan army and smuggled huge amounts of arms across the country. As a minority, they knew they couldn’t win power at the ballot box, so they chose bullets.
On 6 April 1994, Habyarimana’s plane was shot down over Kigali. Everyone on board died.
Kagame’s former bodyguard, Aloys Ruyenzi (now in hiding), says:
A week earlier, he was in a meeting chaired by Kagame. Colonel Rizinde showed a map of the exact spot to shoot the plane down. Kagame approved the plan and ordered it done. Missiles were smuggled in.
When the news came (they were watching football), Ruyenzi says, “Kagame was happy. The other commanders were happy too.” From that moment, the RPF moved.
The peace deal died instantly. Hutu soldiers went on the rampage. The genocide that killed ~1 million people in 100 days had begun.
A French judge later investigated and indicted nine RPF officers. Defected General Nyamwasa (also indicted) told the BBC: “Paul Kagame did shoot down the plane, undoubtedly… I was in a position to know.”
The film’s conclusion: the plane crash was not just the spark; it was the calculated move that allowed Kagame and the RPF to seize power by force instead of sharing it.
Kagame denies everything and says the Hutu extremists did it. His government’s report says the same.
This is not the mainstream “Kagame the saviour” story the world usually hears. It’s the BBC’s own investigation based on eyewitnesses who worked directly with him.
What do you think really happened?
