The 16th-century painting known as the “Portrait of Gregor Baci” depicts the face of a Hungarian nobleman who lived a unique tragedy.

During a fight against the Turks, Gregor Baci was wounded by a spear that pierced his eye and exited from the other side of his skull. After the battle, the survivors were surprised to see him still standing on his feet, as if life refused to leave him despite the horrific wound he had suffered.

He asked that his portrait be painted to commemorate this miracle, as people were amazed at his seemingly impossible survival. To give him some comfort, the doctors cut the protruding ends of the spear from his skull, but they did not dare to remove the weapon from his head for fear that he would bleed to death or that his brain tissue would leak out of the hole.

So he continued to live in a state of constant, severe, and unending pain. Nevertheless, he continued to live for a whole year after his injury, until one morning he was found dead in his bed, as if his torn body had finally decided to give up on what he had long survived.

Astonishing to learn that Theodor Billroth and Johannes Brahms were lifelong close friends.

It seems that Billroth not only pioneered total laryngectomy and -of course- modern surgery, but also shaped the classical music scene of the 19th century.
