As our programme concludes in March 2026, the MEL team and @Pop_Council brought together consortium partners from Kenya, Somaliland, Ethiopia, and Senegal for a 3 day learning forum reflecting on five years of impact. Partners shared successes, challenges, and key lessons, while spotlighting ongoing efforts to scale and sustain approaches proven to advance the movement to #EndFGM. The forum also offered a meaningful moment of recognition as team members took time to affirm one another’s contributions and shared commitment that have driven this work over half a decade.

as a proud advocate of my country, the Republic of Somaliland, a nation that has earned its place on the world stage through peace, democracy, and resilience.

You speak of unity, but unity without consent is coercion. Somaliland was an independent state in 1960, recognised by dozens of countries before voluntarily entering a union with Somalia. That union collapsed in 1991, not by whim, but because of systemic violence, betrayal, and dictatorship. Since then, Somaliland has charted its own path peacefully, democratically, and without foreign troops or donor dependency. That is not failure. That is success.

You mention atrocities under the former military regime. Somaliland remembers them well, because we lived through them. Our people were bombed, buried in mass graves, and hunted by a regime that claimed to represent a “united” Somalia. Recognition is not just a political act it is a moral reckoning. It says to the victims: your suffering was real, and your right to self-determination will not be denied.

You cite clan dynamics in Sool, Sanaag, and Togdheer. These regions are part of Somaliland’s historical borders, and while disputes exist as they do in every nation they are internal matters. Somaliland has shown restraint, dialogue, and reconciliation. Somalia, meanwhile, has struggled to hold elections, secure its capital, or prevent infiltration by Al-Shabaab. The contrast is stark.

You warn that recognition would destabilize the region. I argue the opposite. Somaliland is a stabilizing force. We have kept extremists out, built institutions, and maintained peace in one of the world’s toughest neighborhoods. We have partnered with democratic allies, welcomed investment, and offered strategic access to the Red Sea. Ignoring our achievements only emboldens chaos.

You appeal to President Trump’s legacy. I do too. He is a man who values results, sovereignty, and strength. Somaliland embodies those principles. We are not asking for charity, we are asking for acknowledgment of reality.

Somaliland is not broken. Somalia is. And we will not be dragged back into a failed union that cost us lives, dignity, and decades of progress.

We want to say a huge thank you to the thousands who came out yesterday to represent the beautiful country of Somaliland. We should all be proud of ourselves for taking over one of the UK’s most iconic landmarks.
