Men, women, even children, all caught on the receiving end of the Jharkhand Police crackdown.

Lights switched off. Police allegedly emerging from the darkness. Women allegedly beaten by male cops. Protesters chased and thrashed.

And while Jharkhand ministers sit in front of cameras and deny that any lathicharge happened and Rahul Gandhi “ condemns ”the police action, survivors are coming forward with their testimonies and injuries.

The government can deny it. The people who were there cannot erase what happened to them.

Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 3.9 (the debate with Vidagdha Śākalya).......

During King Janaka’s grand intellectual assembly (Brahma-yajña), after Yājñavalkya had systematically dismantled every great scholar, 1 scholar remained: Vidagdha Śākalya.

Śākalya launched a aggressive interrogation on theology:

Śākalya: "Yājñavalkya! How many devas are there in reality?"

Yājñavalkya: "3306"

Śākalya pressed further:

Śākalya: "Yes, but how many devas are there really?"

Yājñavalkya: "33"

Śākalya: "How many really?"

Yājñavalkya: "6"

Śākalya: "How many really?"

Yājñavalkya: "3"

Śākalya: "How many really?"

Yājñavalkya: "2"

Śākalya: "How many really?"

Yājñavalkya: "One and a half (Adhyardha)."

Śākalya: "How many really?"

Yājñavalkya: "1" (The Prāṇa / Brahman)

Śākalya had failed to trip him up on numbers, but instead of conceding, he kept firing pedantic, peddling questions about the sub-dwelling entities of the cosmos.

Yājñavalkya answered every single query flawlessly. Then, the atmosphere in the court turned bone chillingly cold. Yājñavalkya turned the tables and issued a stark, non-negotiable warning:

तं त्वौपनिषदं पुरुषं पृच्छामि I
तं चेन्मे न विवक्ष्यासि, मूर्धा ते विपतिष्यतीति II

Taṃ tvaupaniṣadaṃ puruṣaṃ pṛcchāmi I
Taṃ cenme na vivakṣyāsi, mūrdhā te vipatiṣyatīti II

I now ask you regarding that Supreme Person revealed only in the Upaniṣads. If you cannot explain Him to me, your head will fall off right here.

In ancient Upaniṣadic debates, invoking Mūrdha-pāta (the bursting / falling off of the head) was the cosmic law of Rta: if you argue falsely against the ultimate reality out of pure malice / ego, your own cognitive apparatus collapses under the weight of the ultimate Truth.

Śākalya, blinded by vanity, refused to back down, could not answer the fundamental question about the underlying Ātman, and kept arguing pedantically.

The Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad records the brutal, unfiltered reality of what happened next with deadpan precision:

ह तस्य ह शाकल्यस्य मूर्धा विपपात, अप्यस्य परिमोषिणोऽस्थीन्यपजह्रुरन्यन्मन्यमानाः I

Ha tasya ha Śākalyasya mūrdhā vipapāta, apyasya parimoṣiṇo'sthīnyapajahruranyat manyamānāḥ I

Śākalya’s head fell off on the spot. Later, as his disciples were carrying his bones home for the final rites, robbers ambushed them on the road and stole his bones, mistaking the bag for precious treasure.

Śākalya did not just lose his life; his very legacy and physical remains were scattered to thieves because he mistook pedantic noise for ultimate Truth.

IMO (again this is my own interpretation) Vidagdha Śākalya represents foreign think tanks, legacy media, and domestic cynics who focus on micro-variables ("How many devas?") while remaining completely blind to the underlying structural reality (the one Brahman).

For decades, global rating agencies, Western academia, and geopolitical commentators arrogantly lectured India on economics and defense. But when forced to face first-principles reality: such as India navigating global energy crises autonomously / building world-leading digital rails, their legacy narratives literally "shattered." Their pedantic models collapsed because they were built on hubris rather than ground truth.

Yājñavalkya’s warning holds true for 21st-century Bharat: When you engage with the world, do not play inside the pedantic, biased rules set by bad-faith actors. Confront them with the unshakeable reality of first-principles, where false narratives simply cannot survive.
