@lionel_trolling It would be extremely notable and penalty worrying if there were 230 steel mills under construction in the US right now. (There are like 500 steel mills total in the country.) People aren't reacting to ONE data center.
@dieworkwear It's actually a core component of fascism. Ur-Fascism 8: "The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies... However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies."
@BjornLomborg Bjorn Lomborg, standing in Pompeii the day before the eruption: "Listen, contaminated water killed way more Pompeiians than volcanoes did last year."
@hannahgais This is a core component of fascism.
"The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies... However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus... the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak..."
@TravLeBlanc@lionel_trolling A fun fact is that expression dates to a French royalist commander attempting to explain why he killed so many pro-democracy advocates
@electricfutures@elonmusk I don't think we should call them 'savings' until we understand what they are. For now, they're canceled contracts.
The things we see look like 'saving money by not changing your car's oil', or sometimes 'by buying a car without wheels.' You don't come out ahead.
@hausfath Question: is it time to start talking more about forecasts past 2100? Feels like that's been our target date since the 1990s, and it's a lot closer now. I worry people may be thinking 2100 numbers represent as bad as it gets
@BeansBulletsBTC@hausfath Hard to avoid that conclusion. Some places might be better than others, but to pick a spot in the zone, south India now hits wet bulb temps of 32C periodically and 34C more than once. 35C kills people fast. It's hard to picture a place 1.5C hotter than now supporting many humans.
