I could imagine that to a lot of people the sudden warnings of ">10% chance of extinction due to AI" are coming out very suddenly and you might wonder, why didn't anyone say anything before?

1) Some have been.
2) It is in fact very hard to get people to take you seriously and respect you when you predict global doom. It strikes many as ludicrous, insane, unserious – so people who believe it have stayed quiet.

"Doomer" has long been a slur and people sharing doomy beliefs have not wanted the label and been "strategic" in what they say.

What has shifted is that there's now enough concrete evidence that it doesn't seem quite so absurd to raise the notion of human extinction, and we're hitting the "Emperor's new clothes" moment where many already-believers combined with many existing-believers feel like they can say what they believe, and despite resistance ("it's all a marketing stunt"), you've got a lot of people backing you up that no, this is not something crazy to believe in 2026.

Win what, exactly?

The race to build systems more intelligent than ourselves, consuming extraordinary amounts of energy and resources, while accepting a non-zero risk that we eventually lose control of them?

And crucially: why?

No serious global risk assessment is warning that humanity faces catastrophe because we aren’t intelligent enough.

They warn about climate change. Ecological breakdown. Conflict. Inequality. Pandemics. And increasingly, AI itself.

Yet our response is to race to make AI ever more powerful because… someone else might get there first.

At some point we should probably stop asking “Can we win the race?”

And start asking “Why are we racing at all, where is the finish line, and what happens if we reach it?”

In vista dei coccodrilli che pioveranno in questi giorni, credo sia corretto dire che Emma Bonino, dal punto di vista della gente che vive del proprio lavoro e che ama l’Italia, è stata politicamente il Male.

Niente di personale, se la vedrà lei dall’altra parte.

Ma per quanto riguarda questa valle di lacrime, se avesse fatto la cassiera invece della parlamentare l'intero paese ne avrebbe tratto beneficio.
