$4.59 at this Illinois Mobil.
Indiana is $3.59. Texas is $3.60. Most of the South is under $3.80.
Pritzker doubled the gas tax years ago and locked Illinois into permanent high prices. The only “relief” was pausing a tiny automatic hike until after the election.
National average is $4.09. The extra 50¢ is pure Springfield.
Blame Trump all you want. The surcharge is still Pritzker’s.
American photographic pioneer Robert Cornelius, who took one of the first self-portrait photographs, October or November 1839, an approximately quarter plate size daguerreotype. On the back is written, "The first light picture ever taken".
My Illinois friends…remember couple months ago when @GovPritzker was going on and on about “Trump raising the price of gas”?….he just raised the gas tax yesterday..everything is performative nonsense..also, I don’t blame him at all. He is pretty transparent..they voted for him
I very briefly lived in Florida from 2020 to 2023. At the end of 2022, Hurricane Ian totaled my house. I had insurance but knew my time in Florida was coming to an end.
A common lie I see spread on here among those that dislike what I post is that I’m a Floridian. I was born and raised in Altamont, NY. I went to Voorheesville High School.
In 2020, I decided to give a new state a try. We have brutal winters in Upstate NY, so it seemed like a good idea.
I missed New York almost the moment I got to Florida. Clearly, I found my way back.
Before I decided to move home, I donated my plot of land I owned in Cape Coral, Florida to the CCFW Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife Trust. The plot is forever protected for the enjoyment of burrowing owls.
On my walks in Florida, I’d travel past countless burrowing owl couples on their T-posts. They are an adorable, mischievous, and peculiar little owl breed. They are very special, and sadly, their burrows are being paved over, destroyed, and filled in for reckless development that the state fails to assess for nature preservation. I couldn’t watch the destruction anymore.
So I came home and donated my land to a conservation trust.
My best friend’s mom sent me these photos this morning. I never got to see the plaque, but seeing the two active burrows on the land behind it made my day.
My love of nature has always been constant. I love our American landscapes and God’s critters so intensely that I will do whatever it takes to protect them.
If that upsets some people along the way, so be it. I walk the walk, no matter how paid-off solar reps, politicians, and reporters want to frame me.
This is one of the most famous paintings in America, and most people have no idea what they are actually looking at...
The painting is Christina's World, made by Andrew Wyeth in 1948, and the woman was real: her name was Anna Christina Olson, Wyeth's neighbour in Cushing, Maine. Since childhood a degenerative condition had slowly taken the strength from her legs, until walking was no longer possible. She refused a wheelchair, and for her entire adult life she chose to drag herself across the ground with her arms instead, going wherever she wanted to go under her own power.
Wyeth saw her one afternoon from an upstairs window, alone in that vast field, crawling slowly toward the house on the hill. He said the painting was an attempt to do justice to her extraordinary conquest of a life which most people would consider hopeless. Her world, he said, was limited physically but by no means spiritually.
That is what turns this painting from a portrait of frailty into one of the most triumphant images ever made...
Look at it long enough and it stops being about what her body took from her, and becomes about what she would not stop doing anyway. The field is enormous and she is small and the house is far away, and still she goes, because the alternative, to be carried, to give up, to let the distance win, was something she simply would not accept.
There is one more thing: Christina loved this painting. Pink was her favorite color, and Wyeth had placed her exactly where she most wanted to be, out in the open, in her own field, under her own sky. Late in her life, when she could no longer even crawl out to that field, she said something that holds the whole meaning of art inside it:
"Andy put me where he knew I wanted to be. Now that I can’t be there anymore, all I do is think of that picture, and I’m there."
The nation's "leading expert" in COVID contracted COVID 3 times after being vaccinated and boosted 6 times.
He had a pulmonary embolism 6 months after his second Moderna shot. This was, of course, not publicized.
Fauci's diary entry for May 21, 2020 is one of the most grotesque documents you will ever read. It opens with the mounting Covid death toll and people dying across the country, then abruptly pivots into an extended exercise in self-congratulation about his newfound fame. How was someone so profoundly narcissistic ever allowed to accumulate so much power and rise so high? Completely unreal.
