55 years ago today, Nixon lied to the American people, saying he was "temporarily" suspending the dollar's convertibility into gold.

What he actually did was subject the country to a grand economic experiment, one that has caused significant economic harm to most families.

Since then, the dollar has lost over 80% of its purchasing power and the national debt has exploded from under $400 billion to over $40 trillion.

Under a gold standard, governments are restrained from simply printing fiat currency because of the limited supply of specie (gold) to back it. With that standard removed, the US could print as much as it wanted, without restraint.

And it has. Under a "temporary" suspension that persists 55 years later.

Margarine contributed nothing to that. Margarine has spent the intervening century quietly working the other way.
