Marvel killed Loki on screen 3 times, and in 2018 the Russo brothers promised fans his death was finally permanent.

8 years later, he's the character holding the entire franchise's plot together. The story of how is the best accidental save in Hollywood.

Start at the beginning. Tom Hiddleston auditioned to play Thor in 2009. He lost the lead to Chris Hemsworth and got the villain as a consolation. That losing audition is now the longest-running character in the MCU: 17 years, 6 films, 2 seasons of TV, and counting.

Then Thanos snapped his neck in the first 5 minutes of Infinity War. Joe Russo confirmed it was real, no resurrections, no tricks. The only way back was a loophole: a 2012 variant grabbing the Tesseract during Endgame's time heist. A throwaway plot device to make the time travel work.

That throwaway device became the TVA, and the TVA became the entire multiverse framework the next decade of Marvel runs on.

Here's where the timing gets absurd. The Loki season 2 finale aired November 9, 2023, ending with Loki personally holding every timeline together. Five weeks later, Marvel dropped Jonathan Majors, and the villain their whole saga was built around vanished overnight. The Kang Dynasty was dead. The one piece of multiverse infrastructure still standing was the character they swore was gone in 2018.

So when the saga got rebuilt around Doctor Doom, Loki was the load-bearing beam. Even in this trailer, the biggest mystery, how Steve Rogers came back, apparently runs through Loki's TVA card.

The most important character in a $30 billion franchise is the guy who lost his audition, then got killed off for real.
