1. Objectives of the Collaboration: The primary goal is to use technology to modernize the power grid, manage energy efficiently, and reduce power outages

2. Challenges in Energy Management: Professor Kamakoti explains that energy generation (like solar, wind, and thermal) often fluctuates and does not always align with consumer demand. They are researching ways to better predict demand, store surplus energy using batteries, and distribute it effectively

3. Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI will be used to analyze large amounts of data to predict power failures, manage sensor networks, and increase the overall resilience of the electrical infrastructure against natural disasters like cyclones or high-voltage surges

4. Security and Monitoring: The initiative includes research into cybersecurity to protect the power grid from potential cyber-attacks, as well as developing smart meter technologies that are tamper-proof and reliable

5. Practical Implementation: The collaboration involves setting up R&D offices at both IIT Madras and the electricity department to facilitate knowledge exchange. The goal is to bring research out of laboratories and into practical use for the common man

6. Expertise: Because energy networks involve many engineering disciplines—including power electronics, computer science, and metallurgy—a consortium of over 100 faculty members from IIT Madras will be involved based on specific project needs

The ultimate vision is to create an energy-surplus and highly resilient electricity distribution network for Tamil Nadu

I have not made any kind of statement that Karnataka would not release water to Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka’s inability to release water is dictated by negligible flows into Four Karnataka reservoirs namely KRS, Kabini, Harangi and Hemavathy and insufficient storages in these reservoirs.

Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) is the competent Authority for taking decision on the release of water from Karnataka Reservoirs based on the recommendations of Cauvery Water Regulatory Committee (CWRC) and Government of Karnataka has no role in this issue.

The Cumulative Live Storage (MDDL) in Four reservoirs of Karnataka as on 30th June 2026 was 15.761 TMC, which is insufficient for Drinking water needs of the state for next three months.

The cumulative inflows into the into four reservoirs, till the CWRC meeting on 30.06.2026, was 4.05 TMC (Biligundlu 2.915 TMC).

Karnataka submitted in the meetings of CWRC on 16.06.2026 and 30.06.2026, CWMA meeting on 23.06.2026 the storage in the four reservoirs will have to be conserved for meeting the drinking water needs to Bengaluru Metropolitan region, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Ramanagar and other cities.

The submissions of Karnataka in the meetings have been considered by the CWMA and CWRC and decisions were rendered as:

Since mid of May, the IMD has been publicising in various News Dailies that El-Nino Phenomenon has set in resulting in delayed monsoon and deficit rainfall.

I hope that the South-West monsoon will pick up in the coming days and sufficient flows would be available in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu reservoirs.
