I first applied for German citizenship back in Nov 2022. Two and a half years later, I'm still unable to vote. For The Local, I wrote about how millions will have no voice in this election due to flawed policies and endless delays for naturalisation. https://t.co/sKv9z9ai6R
@SteveNickSmith Of course! We definitely are, and again, apologies for being yet another rude person on Twitter. I think I just want to hold on to a brief moment of hope before reality sets in again - that was why my reaction was so visceral.
In short, Israel is:
an Apartheid state
occupying Gaza
illegally annexing the WB
violating self-determination
This is illegal, so it must:
end the occupation
fully repair/compensate Palestinians, including through right of return & dismantelling settlements
Incredible
@aboutberlin The Aufenthaltsdokument-GB for Brits can only be activited at the Ausländerbehörde, unfortunately! I tried and failed at the Bürgeramt and ended up having to wait for an apt at the LEA.
@alpinemigrant@TheLocalGermany Really sorry to hear about this! One step forward, two steps back... Fingers crossed the French elections don't shake out as apocalyptically as we're all thinking.
Back in 2020, I wrote for @TheLocalGermany about the stress felt by Brits who were unable to take German-UK dual nationality after Brexit. Today, after literally years of reporting on the issue, Germany's dual nationality law has finally come into force. It feels a bit surreal.
@imbresigau They'd need to roughly double their vote share to even form a minority government, since none of the other parties want to work with them, so I think that's very unlikely :) The CDU want to overturn it too but they're very much alone in that, so I'd say it's here to stay.
This definitely won't be the end of us reporting on Germany's dual citizenship law - we're expecting long waiting times and confusion at a lot of the immigration offices - but today definitely feels like a day to celebrate.
Good news! The new citizenship rules kick in today and you can apply for German Citizenship after living here for 3 or 5 years.
But as always, Berlin has a surprise for us all if you wanted to send in your application today.
Friendly reminder to Brits in Germany to register to vote by midnight tonight. We've also got some tips to how to get your vote to the ballot in time (hint: get a proxy) https://t.co/lTN5WBl0JV
Unfortunately, a tabloid newspaper has got hold of a music video I recorded in Islington North with an iconic grime artist I've admired for years.
They are planning to publish a heavily edited clip, so I'm releasing the full version myself. Watch here: https://t.co/vwNGQN2wqU
Imagine going to the club in 1970 to hang with your friends and a band you’ve never heard of called Kraftwerk is playing and they ruin your night by inventing techno music
Since October there has been such a grim synchronicity between state violence in Gaza and Neukölln.
When Israel escalates its bombing, or commits a particularly grisly massacre, you can bet the Berlin police will be assaulting teenagers on Sonnenallee soon after.
@berlinerzeitung@BMI_Bund@nathan_giwerzew Vielleicht weil der weit größte Teil der politisch-motivierten Straftaten aus dem rechtsextremistischen Bereich stammt, oder?
Yesterday I did an interview with @dwnews - a German outlet about Norwegian, Irish, and Spanish recognition of Palestinian statehood. It did not go well & the tape is nowhere to be found. #Thread
